5 biggest cargo ships in the world – The colossal vessels of the sea

This international shipping industry is responsible for about 90% of cargo that is being sent from one country to another and the International Chamber of Shipping has stated that there are currently about 50,000 ships out on the oceans as of 2020. Here are the largest.

HMM Algeciras

This is the largest ship design in the world at present and is a containership with 24,000 TEU capacity. What's best about this giant vessel is that it is eco-friendly as well. Vessels of this kind are the most technologically enhanced vessels in the world and is 399.9 metres in length and 33.2 m in depth. To improve its environmental friendliness, the ship has been fitted with an efficient engine that allows the conservation of energy. Also, the containership has been fitted with a scrubbed as per the IMO 2020 requirements. The ship was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

HMM OSLO

This is the sister ship of the largest cargo ship in the world mentioned above. It was built by Samsung Heavy Industries and made its maiden voyage last year along with its sister ship, HMM Algeciras. It is 400 metres line and 61.5 metres wide. The ship can carry a load of 23,792 TEU. The maximum draft would be 16.50 metres.

MSC Gulsun

This is a ship run by the Mediterranean Shipping Company and was registered in Panama as were the aforementioned ships as well. It is the first of its kind and is 62 metres in width and 400 metres long. the ship can carry 23,756 TEU and is known today as the third-largest cargo ship in the world. It can carry 24 containers across, side by side.

MSC Mina

Measuring 400 metres in length and 61 metres width, the ship was constructed by Samsung Heavy Industries and is currently the fourth largest containership in the world. It is capable of transporting a capacity of 23,656 TEU.

CMA CGM Jacques Saadé

This is one of the largest ships on earth that happen to be powered by liquefied natural gas. The ship is 78 metres in height and 61 metres wide. It is 400 metres long as well and can carry a cargo of about 23,000 TEU. The ship is owned by China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

OOCL Hong Kong

This is yet another behemoth built by the Samsung Heavy Industries and was the first ship to exceed 21,000 TEU. The six-G Class was designed and is owned and managed by the Orient Overseas Container Line and runs on the route from East Asia to Northern Europe under the Hong Kong flag. As the news goes from the OOCL, the ship was built as a result of the Free Trade Agreement between China and Hong Kong. The ship was christened in 2017 at the Geoje shipyard.

COSCO Shipping Universe

Another giant of the seas and this time China's very own large vessel, COSCO Shipping Universe has a capacity of 21,237 TEU. It is 400 metres in length and 58.6 metres wide.

The Colombo Port is likely to see ships of this magnitude coming from various countries for containers to be unloaded at South Asia Gateway Terminals and other terminals.
