Top 5 attractions in Colombo – the best of the city of Colombo city

Colombo is one of the first cities that you will want to visit if you happen to visit Sri Lanka. It is the most urbanised part of the island and is your typical city with several office buildings and a bunch of things to do for entertainment.

1

Traditional Puppet Art Museum

The art of puppetry in Sri Lanka came from the early times when entertainment was something that only the kings could afford to have. Since then, the stage for puppetry evolved and slowly went into decline as the island became more westernized. In the past puppets were not only used for entertainment but also to ward off evil spirits in religious rituals. There are also special masks that are sculpted to look like devils. Well-trained performers wear these masks and perform exorcism rituals as well. All items related to such arts have been displayed at this museum in Dehiwala open from 9 am to 5 pm.

2

Galle Face Green

Located closer to the heart of Colombo, the Galle Face Green was once a fort that was said to have reached up to the Colombo Fort. Now, it is only half the size of what it used to be. It was used by the British to launch a barrage of cannon attacks on the Portuguese before they could enter the island. A few cannons are still there today. It is now a promenade where the locals often come to relax and perhaps fly some kites in the evenings.

3

Gangaramaya Temple

Located by the side of the Beira Lake is this wonderful stupa that is said to have been constructed by a wealthy shipping merchant named Don Bastian. He bought out the land from 3 Moors and invested in the construction of a grand temple known today as Gangaramaya Temple. What most striking about the temple is the architecture that was inspired by Indian, Thai, Chinese and Sri Lanka ancient architecture. The most popular eye-catching feature of the complex is the Simamalaka Shrine which was designed by Geoffrey Bawa and was subsidised by a wealthy Muslim donor.

4

Colombo Dutch Hospital

The Dutch Hospital was as its name suggests once a hospital that was built by the Dutch during their time of rule over the country. Today the place has been converted into a social hub with bars, pubs and restaurants within the complex. The place is quite popular for its food fairs and party nights. It is the hub of Colombo's nightlife too.

5

Mount Lavinia Beach

If you visit Colombo Sri Lanka, make sure to visit the most beautiful beach here, the Mount Lavinia Beach. The waters are clear blue and tranquil. The beach is also lined with several cafes and restaurants for you to enjoy a snack or even lunch or dinner with a cooler in hand while watching the waves crash against the shores. It is also a great place to people-watch in the evening. Most locals visit the beach with their pets in the evenings. Some come with family and friend for some fun. Truly Sri Lanka is a website offering more detailed accounts on the above if you want to know more.
