Top Must-See Attractions in Bali - Main Highlights to Visit in Bali

Indonesia's holiday island is not only a beach Mecca for the masses but also an engaging tourist hotspot for culture buffs and history fanatics. From iconic temples to exquisite recreational hubs, here's a rundown of Bali's must-experience highlights.

1

Mount Batur

Towering above the surrounding landscape at an imposing height of 1700 meters, Mount Batur is one of a kind natural wonder on the island of Bali. This holy volcano occupies pride of place in Bali's central hills and is found in the island's Kintamani District. Just an hour away from Ubud, the best way to explore this captivating volcano is to hike up to its summit to catch the sunrise. The hiking trails on Mount Batur are well designated and easy to follow while the entire journey to the top takes 2 to 3 hours. Guided tours are ideal for first-time visitors as most also include a picnic breakfast that's prepared using the steam from the volcano.

2

Pura Tanah Lot

Ideally situated in Kuta, Pura Tanah Lot is one of Bali's most spectacular temples not only in Indonesia but in Asia at large. Quietly nestled in a seaside location, the rocky islet on which the temple is situated provides a dramatic backdrop for this famous Hindu temple. Considered sacred by locals and Hindu devotees alike, the temple dates back to the 16th century and is believed to have been built to pay homage to a holy monk named Nirartha who spent a night at the location. The panoramic views alone are worth the trip to the venue which also offers easy access to Batu Bolong, a neighbouring sea temple of equal beauty.

3

Ubud Monkey Forest

Those based at Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali or any similar Bali family resorts on the island should also take the time to walk around Ubud Monkey Forest. Conveniently placed a mere 10 minutes away from the heart of Ubud city centre, this natural enclave known as the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is a treasure trove for both animal lovers as well as shutterbugs. Home to countless grey long-tailed macaques, this tropical jungle is best explored on a hike or walk through the many paved pathways crisscrossing the forest floor. Lined with nutmeg and banyan trees, ancient temples, as well as ruins of sculptures, make an excursion in the forest a truly enchanting experience.

4

Uluwatu Temple

Looking out over one of the island's most coveted surf spots, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is another iconic temple all visitors must explore at least once. Located on an oceanfront clifftop, the sprawling temple is a popular location in Bali to catch the sunset. Believed to have been megalithic in origin, the venue was built as early as the 10th century in order to protect the island from evil spirits of the ocean. The monkeys occupying the nearby forest are also known to guard the temple and the area's inhabitants from bad spirits while the main highlight of a visit to the Uluwatu Temple is the chance to witness a Kecak dance performance.
