Colombo Transportation – Explore every corner of the commercial capital of Sri Lanka

Colombo is indeed one of the busiest cities in Sri Lanka featuring the best of all shopping malls, housing complexes, and commercial buildings. Exploring Colombo is exciting and interesting, only if you choose the right mode of transportation.

1

Colombo and the BIA

BIA stands for the Bandaranaike International Airport of Sri Lanka. Although the airport is located around 40km away from Colombo, you can come to Colombo from the airport within less than 1 hour, thanks to the new motorway connecting the two spots. Once you arrive at the airport, you may simply take a taxi to head to Uga Residence or any of the other luxury boutique hotels in Colombo. But, please note that this will be a pricey option, and if you get to run into traffic, the cost will be even higher than the average. If you are looking for a cheaper option, you may use the free shuttle bus running from the airport to the bus station and then catch the 187 bus from there to head to Colombo. Don't worry, you'll still have space to keep your luggage and they offer comfortable seating too!

2

Getting around Colombo by bus

Getting around Colombo by bus is the cheapest and the easiest option of all. No matter where you need to head to, buses are available to cover every route. If you are in a hurry, you may look for an express bus (the ticket may be a little higher in price than the average). If you intend to take a normal bus, you'll have to wait a little more because they hardly follow their schedules. Some bus rides maybe adventurous, so be a little prepared for this too! After all, you are collecting memories.

3

Getting around Colombo by tuk-tuks

Tuk-tuks (also known as tri-shaws / three-wheelers) is an extremely popular mode of transportation in Colombo. You just need to come out of your hotel and hand-signal a tuk-tuk to halt, and it'll stop by you if it doesn't have any passenger in it. All most all the three-wheelers have meters installed, so the drivers now can't cheat on the rates. But, before you start your ride, check if the meter is on!

4

Getting around Colombo by taxis

This is another common mode of transportation within Colombo. You just need to have an app such as Uber or PickMe (yes, there are many other apps, but these two are the most famous) and book your trip. The cab will come to where you are and take you to your preferred location without any hassle. It's safe and precise.

5

Going out of Colombo

What will be your next destination in Sri Lanka after Colombo? Kandy, Anuradhapura, Galle, or Jaffna? Whatever it is, you have easy access to your chosen destination from Colombo. You may either travel by train or bus, and any option will be cheaper than getting a taxi hired for your tour. Trains and even buses can be booked in advance, and that means you are guaranteed a seat.
