06 Things Not to Do in the Maldives – Enjoy a Worry-Free Getaway

While you may find plenty of information on things to do in Maldives, equally important is keeping in mind what you shouldn't do! Much of this is to do with being respectful of the culture as well as local laws and the more you know, the better prepared you will be.

1

Don't Bring Alcohol into the Maldives

Keep in mind that this is a Muslim nation and has several strict laws. This includes the banning of bringing any alcoholic beverages into the country even wine and champagne. Additionally, alcohol cannot be sold or consumed on local islands either. Don't lose hope of savouring your favourite cocktails, however; alcohol can be served and enjoyed at private island resorts in Maldives so there's no need to become a teetotaller on your holiday!

2

Don't Wear Bikinis on Local Islands

While you can wear your favourite bikini or two-piece swimsuit to enjoy beachside bliss at private resorts the likes of Adaaran Prestige Water Villas, remember that you can't do so on local islands. This again pertains to the fact that this is a Muslim country and individuals are expected to dress modestly, with bikinis being a definite no-no; this also applies to tourists visiting local islands though some of them do have specially designated "bikini beaches"

3

Don't Harm the Marine Environment

The country is blessed with some truly stunning coral and marine life that can be witnessed when enjoying the many activities to do in Maldives including snorkelling and diving. However, when doing so, make sure you take special care to not harm these natural treasures or the environment in general. Under no circumstance should you break coral or make physical contact with marine life; additionally, do not litter or throw plastic items into the ocean and consider wearing reef-safe sunscreen too.

4

Don't Buy Banned Souvenirs

When souvenir shopping in Maldives, you may come across certain items that have been made from tortoise shells or coral. In such instances, do not buy such products; turtles are endangered species and the sale of any item made from them is prohibited. This applies for coral-based products as well and if such items are found in your possession, they will be seized and can lead to harsh penalties.

5

Don't Go Without Sun Protection

While you may be dreaming of spending your days lazing in the sun working on perfecting that holiday tan, don't forget you need adequate protection for your skin too. Sunscreen is vital for this and use a product that has an SPF 30 or higher sun protection factor which combats both UVB and UVA rays. Wearing caps or wide-brimmed sunhats and polarised sunglasses will also help when out in the sun.

6

Don't Engage in PDA on Local Islands

When travelling to or touring local islands with your partner, do keep in mind to refrain from PDA or public displays of affection. Be mindful that as per the local culture, such displays of affection like kissing (even on the cheek) are considered very offensive and can lead to action being taken too. That said, the rules are relaxed on private resorts so you can enjoy being more carefree with your loved one at such places.
