In mid-sized cities across America for nearly 100 years, the daily newspaper was the purveyor of enterprise journalism, the opinion maker and a focal point for advertising. In many cities they were monopolies: they set the pricing for advertising, they promoted and punished political officials, and they decided the news cycle every day.
So the BBC has been ticked off by its Trust (the governors in old money) for delivering local news that isn't local, lacks relevance and is weak online. 'To improve BBC Online we have set out a number of actions, including: BBC management should develop plans for BBC Online to provide a better local offer' 'One area for improvement is the provision of local content, particularly local news.
Just a few days ago I wrote about a new wordpress theme that I have discovered and that has some potential for being a great hyperlocal directory. Over the weekend I had some time to do a little bit more research on the theme and hunt down some great live sites using this theme.
