6 Things to Know before Buying a Projector

Projector Buying Guide - How much should be the brightness, contrast ratio and resolution. We will also discuss Throw Distance and Lamp Lifespan.

1

Introduction

Introduction

The large screen size offered by the projectors makes them dominant over TVs. Also, the price of a decent projector starts at $500.

If you are planning to convert your living room into a home theater then the projector is the best choice.

Also, with a projector, you can host a football or movie night on a massive screen of 200-300 inches.
Many projectors from brands like Epson, BenQ, Optoma, JVC, and Sony offers impressive performance. For people with a low budget, there are several fantastic affordable projectors are also available.

In this listicle, I will be explaining the fundamental things that you need to consider while buying a projector.

2

Brightness

Brightness

It is measured in Lumens.

The brightness value depends on the location. If you set up the projector in a dark room then the 1000 Lumen projector will give you excellent picture quality.

But in the presence of ambient light, the brightness value should be at least 2000 Lumens.

So decide how much light will be present around your projector and then accordingly go for a higher lumen count.

3

Contrast Ratio

Contrast Ratio

It decides the sharpness and clarity of the projected image. Contrast Ratio is defined as the difference between the lightest and darkest area of the image.

Choose a projector with a high contrast ratio as possible!

4

Resolution

Resolution

You might have heard about the terms 480p, 720p, HD 1080p, 2K, UHD 4K. They stand for the resolution of images/videos.

Usually, a higher contrast ratio means an excellent viewing experience.

Most of the projector offers fixed resolution and you cannot switch between different sets of resolutions. But few projectors come with a variety of resolutions, so look for them as well.

5

Lamp Lifespan

Most of the brands claim to provide a lamp life of 40,000 hours. Importantly, lamps are not covered in the projector warranty!

Also, the cost of the projector is in the range of hundreds of dollars.

So, I will suggest you choose a projector with a longer lamp lifespan and be careful with the lamp while using your projector.

6

Throw Distance

Throw Distance

It is the distance between projector and screen. Throw distance depends upon the size of the projector.

Generally, costlier and bigger projectors offer longer throw distances.

If possible then try to measure the distance between your desired locations for placing the projector and screen.

7

Portability

Portability

As I said earlier, the projectors are insanely portable when compared to a TV set.

There are few projectors AKA Pico Projectors that can fit into your pocket. For the people on the go, this feature is of prime importance.
