LiSA's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Film Theme Wins Song of the Year in Japan
LiSA's "Homura" song, the theme song for the Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train film, won Song of the Year at the 62nd Japan Record Awards on Wednesday. This is the first time in four years that a female solo artist won it, since Kana Nishino won in 2016. LiSA thanked composer Yuki Kajiura, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga creator Koyoharu Gotouge, the anime studio ufotable, the production company Aniplex, Sony Music, and the fans during her acceptance speech.
The Japan Record Awards had announced in November that Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba won one of the Special Achievement Awards, which honor people or works that have garnered widespread attention or captured the zeitgeist. The other Special Achievement Award winners this year were Uru, NiziU, Seiko Matsuda, and Kenshi Yonezu.
The award ceremony aired in Japan on TBS.
LiSA's "Homura" song has ranked #1 on Oricon's weekly digital singles ranking chart for 11 consecutive weeks. It has surpassed Kenshi Yonezu's 2018 single "Lemon" as the longest-running #1 single on the chart. "Homura" sold 31,363 downloads from December 21 to 27 for a new total of 770,556.
Last week, "Homura" returned to the #1 spot in Oricon's weekly streaming chart after three weeks, with 10,632,183 downloads for a new total of 132,986,137. It has been in the #1 spot for a total of eight weeks since its release, and it is the first song to be streamed over 10 million times a week for nine straight weeks.
The song also sold 56,149 physical copies during the same week to rank #5 on the CD singles chart, and now has sold 1,004,879 physical copies. It is the first single to sell one million physical copies this year, and LiSA's second single to accomplish this feat after "Gurenge."
Earlier this month, Billboard Japan's streaming song chart recorded the song with 100 million times streamed since its October 12 release.
The song is the third ever single to rank #1 on Oricon's weekly digital singles ranking chart for at least six consecutive weeks, after Kenshi Yonezu's 2018 single "Lemon" and 2019 single "Uma to Shika" accomplished the feat. LiSA is also the first female artist to accomplish this feat.
The "Homura" single shipped on October 14, and sold 68,000 CD copies in its first week. LiSA is the first artist to rank #1 for three straight weeks in 12 years and 10 months, since the band SMAP achieved the feat with their "Dangan Fighter" single in January 2008.
Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train began screening in 38 IMAX theaters in Japan on October 16. The film has now sold a total of 24,049,907 tickets to earn 32,478,895,850 yen (about US$314 million) in 73 days — thus making it the highest-earning film ever in Japan.
LiSA's earlier single "Gurenge" (the theme song for the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba television anime) became the third most-downloaded song in the history of Oricon's digital single ranking chart in June. As of July, the single has been in the top 10 ranking for at least 27 consecutive weeks, and has been in the top 10 at least 44 weeks since the song's digital debut in April 2019. In the April 20-26 week, it rose from the fifth to the fourth most downloaded song in the history of Oricon's digital single ranking chart. In the April 27-May 3 week, the single recorded its fifth week at #1 in the ranking (including two consecutive weeks in May 2019, one week in December 2019, and the April 20-26 and April 27-May 3 weeks).

Atlus, KOEI Tecmo Games, and Omega Force released the game for the PS4 and Switch in Japan in February 2020.
The game's story is set half a year after the original Persona 5 game's story, with the game's main characters going on summer vacation, but becoming involved in a new incident that spans the whole of Japan. The original game's main characters are playable.
The original Persona 5 game shipped for the PS4 and PlayStation 3 in Japan in September 2016. The game shipped in North America in April 2017 after a delay. The game features animation sequences from Production I.G.

-Sōichiro Hoshi as Son Goku

In addition, Houchu Ohtsuka is in the new anime's voice cast.
Minekura drew a teaser visual for the Saiyuki Reload -ZEROIN- anime:

The Saiyuki Reload Blast sequel manga launched in Ichijinsha's Comic Zero Sum in 2009, but Minekura slowed down her publication of the manga in 2013 due to her health. The manga franchise as a whole has 25 million copies in circulation worldwide. Tokyopop published the original manga, and Kodansha re-released the manga.
The various manga series also inspired four television anime series, an anime film, three original video anime (OVA) series, and several stage musical productions.
The Saiyuki Reload Blast anime premiered in July 2017. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired, and Funimation offered a simuldub.

Last month, we had a tease of three Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba characters as drawn by Gintama author Hideaki Sorachi. Now, we can see the entire collage, with Tanjirō surrounded by all nine Hashira, as well as another illustration of Gintama's Yorozuya trio.
In true Gintama fashion, the text on the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba illustration reads "The final battle of the Hashira (samurai)! Though most of them aren't even involved" — acknowledging that only some of the Hashira are in the Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train film's main plot.
The two illustrations will adorn a double-sided mini-poster that theaters will start handing out to audiences of the Gintama: The Final film on January 29, the start of the film's fourth weekend. Theatergoers during the film's first week are also receiving one of 10 randomly distributed cards that feature each of the characters Sorachi drew.
Sorachi also drew animation sketches for footage in the film, and theaters will hand out four more randomly distributed cards with those sketches in the second and third weeks of screenings. Written messages from 31 cast and staff members, including the director, will also be included in the audience gifts.
Gintama: The Final opened in Japan last Friday. The film isbe based on the finale of the original manga, combined with new story elements.
The manga is also inspiring a new net anime special titled Gintama The Semi-Final with a story that will be a two-episode prequel to the film. The net anime will premiere exclusively in Japan on the online dTV service on January 15. The film also has a novel by Mirei Miyamoto that also shipped last Friday.
Sorachi's original "science-fiction period-drama comedy" manga began in 2003 and ended in June 2019 with over 55 million copies in circulation. The latest anime series premiered in July 2018. The manga has also inspired various original video anime (OVA), event anime, two live-action films, and two live-action net spinoffs. Viz Media published the manga's first 23 volumes in English.
The first 49 episodes of the first television series began streaming on Hulu with a new English dub in December. Sentai Filmworks released the anime's first 49 episodes on DVD in 2010 and 2011, but that release did not include an English dub.

As the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime approaches, series protagonist Rimuru Tempest gets a new figure to celebrate the occasion. Based on an original illustration by character designer Ryōma Ebata, this latest 1/7th scale figure sees the Demon Lord Rimuru drawing his sword from its scabbard in a new outfit that will be featured in the upcoming anime season. From the hem of Rimuru's jacket to the flutter of his hair, the features of Ebata's character design has been carefully recreated in the figure.
This item is a new addition to the With Fans! merchandise label, a joint effort between Bandai Namco Arts and Good Smile Company.
Each figure costs 16,500 yen (approximately US$160) including tax. Pre-orders are open at Bandai Namco Arts official mail order site, A-on STORE as well as Good Smile's online shop until March 31. As a purchase bonus, A-on STORE will offer a A3 clear poster, while Good Smile's online shop will offer an acrylic logo stand.
The That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime anime adapts Taiki Kawakami's manga, which in turn adapted author Fuse and artist Mitz Vah's light novel series. It's first season premiered in October 2018. Crunchyroll streamed the series, and Funimation streamed an English dub. The second anime season premieres on January 12 in Japan, and Crunchyroll and Funimation will both stream the season as it airs.

Bandai Namco Pictures announced on Tuesday that it is producing a new original project titled Shinsengumi Kitchen Diary (Shinsengumi Chūbō Roku), with a planned web novel, manga, and anime.
The project's themes are "gourmet," "time travel," and "shinsengumi." The manga centers on Izumi Inaba, a high school girl who has cooking skills rivaling professionals. A bizarre incident leads her to accidentally travel back in time to Japan's Bakumatsu period in the middle of the 19th century. There, she meets Hijikata Toshizō, a famous commander of the shogunate's shinsengumi police, and he shows Izumi his top class cooking skills, as she also joins the shinsengumi.
SOW, the author of The Combat Baker and Automaton Waitress light novels, is writing the web novel, which began serializing on Tuesday. Masatsugu Saitō, the character designer of the Expelled from Paradise and Cyborg 009 Call of Justice films, is designing the characters.
Artist Kyoko Kumagai (Hatsumei Princess, Ayakashi Hisen) is launching the manga in Kadokawa's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine on February 26.

The anime adaptation of Aneko Yusagi's The Rising of the Shield Hero turned heads with its 25-episode debut season. Last year's Crunchyroll Expo revealed the series was green-lit for second and third season, and after today the wait is over. Season two will premiere sometime in 2021, and the third season won't be as long of a wait.
This year's panel for Shield Hero features Keigo Koyanagi (series composition), Masahiro Suwa (character design and chief animation director), Junichiro Tamura (producer from Kadokawa), and MC'd by voice actress Sarah Emi Bridcutt.
Following up on the excitement of last year, the panel began with a Q&A focused on reflection and production. Tamura shared he was surprised to see a variety of languages and support from fans around the world commenting on the Shield Hero videos. Regarding what episode drove the most excitement, Koyanagi confidently claimed episode 21, aka Myne's “execution.” As reference, Crunchyroll's post of that scene has 2.8M views on YouTube, making it the most popular clip from the series.
On a more relaxed note, character designer Suwa voiced his surprise at how popular Raphtalia was, but he thought she and Naofumi make a “great combo.” Conversely, his favorite character to design was The Pope because of how hard it was to pin down. Otherwise, Suwa tried to keep the designs relatively simple to make it easier for others to draw.
The next set of questions focused on the care and level of detail taken in terms of the script and the character designs. Although Koyanagi said it was difficult to convince the audience to keep watching and build excitement for the following episodes, Bridcutt assured that he did a great job based on the sheer volume of reactions from Twitter and streams of the show.
When asked if there was anything memorable from the voice recording sessions, Tamura said his impressions of the characters had changed once he heard the voice auditions. In addition to the main cast, he had help picked the candidates that fit characters that show up later in the series. Looking back at last year, the panelists voiced how encouraged and motivated they were after interacting with fans overseas. Although the autograph sessions were more than what they expected, they all thoroughly enjoyed their time seeing fans face to face and receiving words of appreciation and fanart. They wish they had more to show last year, but luckily they have more to reveal.
Unfortunately, they couldn't reveal all their secrets for what's to come, but what they could talk about was how production for season two is rolling along. Producer Tamura divulged how the script and other parts of anime production were proceeding, but there was no information on how much of the story the next season would cover. Of course, the question that many fans—and Sarah Emi Bridcutt herself—had on their mind was, “Will Myne be back?” No clear answer was given, but Tamura encouraged people to stay tuned for characters who might return. Auditions for the upcoming season are underway.
In the meantime, because Masato Jinbo had replaced Takao Abo as director for season two, Tamura reiterated that there are many surprises to look forward to. Before closing off the panel entirely, surprise guests Kaito Ishikawa (Naofumi), Asami Seto (Raphtalia), and Rina Hidaka (Firo) all separately shared their reflection of season one and their characters through audio. Even though there was no video recording accompanying their audio, all three actors couldn't hold back their tension and excitement to reprise their roles. For those who can't wait for next year, Rina Hidaka puts it best: “Season two will be here soon!”

Players log into their favorite MMORPG, eager to experience the newest update. The next thing they know, they appear to be inside the bodies of their avatars rather than just controlling them on a screen. Somehow, the latest update to Elder Tale has pulled its users into its world, forcing them to find a way to survive in what was once nothing more than a game!
Does this sound familiar? It should – even without naming the game the characters suddenly find themselves in, it could be the plot of any number of stories in the “trapped in a game” subgenre of the now-ubiquitous isekai field of stories. But this particular iteration is one we haven't seen in anime form since 2015: Log Horizon. Although it shares a lot of similarities with the series that came both before and after it, it still stands out for the way it builds its world, its characters, and the unique details about how the players navigate their stress relief becoming their lives.
But first, why has it been so long since Log Horizon last graced our screens? Season two of the anime certainly didn't have any sort of hard conclusion, and the source light novels also had a three-year gap in their Japanese publication. The answer lies with the creator, Mamare Touno (who also is behind the earlier MAOYU series): he had a little problem with his taxes to the tune of 30 million yen. In 2016 he was found guilty of tax evasion and sentenced to ten months in prison. This sentence was suspended for three years, contingent upon his good behavior and an additional fine of 7 million yen for his rights-management company. Those three years are now over, and so Log Horizon is able to pick back up in both anime and light novel forms. The anime then suffered a setback due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but season three will at last air this January.

Hentai Kamen creator Keishuu Andou has jumped onboard the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba trend by posting his fanart on Twitter. His fanart, however, is rooted in the quirks of his own hit manga, which tells the story of a superhero who gains his powers from wearing panties over his head.
The illustration depicts the Hentai Kamen protagonist wearing a pair of panties with the color scheme of the coat worn by Demon Slayer protagonist Tanjiro. He exclaims: "W-what is this? These panties... It's incredibly easy to do Full Concentration Breathing...!" The Full Concentration Breathing is a technique depicted in Demon Slayer.
Andou's tweet translates to: "I jumped on the bandwagon."
Andou's original six-volume manga ran in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 1992-1993. The series has inspired two live-action films.

Synopsis:
With his goals firmly established and aided by his brother Albert's political ascension to a new branch of the intelligence office, William James Moriarty is more than ready to embark on the real work of bringing down the noble classes. He decides that turning London into a terrible den of crime and iniquity is the first step, and he frames it as putting on a sort of morality play for all the land to see. And if he's creating mysteries, then he's going to need a detective – and luckily for him, a plan carried out on the luxury steamliner Noahtic provides one for him: a young man named Sherlock Holmes.
Review:
Think of the previous volume and the first three chapters of this one as the prologue for Moriarty the Patriot. When viewed in light of the fourth chapter in this second volume – which begins retelling A Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes story published in 1887 – everything that comes before it is in service of establishing Moriarty as a criminal consultant prior to his meeting with the man who would become his nemesis. At this point it doesn't necessarily look as if they have a mutual antipathy (although we do need to remember the opening pages of volume one in that statement), but more a question of Moriarty finding Sherlock Holmes a useful player in the show he's staging for England's edification. After all, if there's a mystery, there simply must be a detective to solve it.
That play is something he lays out in the two-chapter adventure on the luxury steamliner Noahtic, which is a very thinly-veiled Titanic – even scenes set onboard the ship are recognizable from photos of the doomed vessel. This ship doesn't appear like she's going to meet a terrible fate on her maiden voyage, although the same cannot be said for the passengers. Moriarty's first scene in his crime drama (which sounds like he's relying at least a little on the themes of popular cheap Victorian entertainments such as melodramas and penny dreadfuls) is set on the ship and involves a particularly loathsome nobleman named Blitz Enders. (We can only hope that Blitz is one of those ridiculous nicknames that turn up in fiction sometimes, like “Bunchie” or “Wootsie.”) Count Enders not only so firmly believes in the superiority of the ruling class that he's willing to warp bible verses to suit himself, but he also insists on viewing the lower classes as subhuman to the point where he enjoys hunting them for sport on his estate(s). Moriarty essentially sets him up to reveal himself to the world by sacrificing a random third-class passenger on the ship, pretending to help Enders, and then (melo)dramatically staging a reveal of the man's murderous tendencies. It's prime theatre, and the fact that he happens to bump into the world's only consulting detective onboard is just the icing on the cake.

The anime's official website also unveiled more cast and staff members, theme song artists, and the anime's February 25 Netflix debut date in Japan.

To survive in this hellish world, she has two choices: kill the masked figures or be killed. Yuri is determined to survive in order to destroy this irrational world, but what will be her ultimate fate?

You know, I can't for the life of me think of a yuri anime about adults, let alone a cool speculative fiction one without fan service that combines an influential Russian science fiction novel with modern Japanese urban myth. Or am I being too specific here?
The point is, Otherside Picnic is one of a kind, and a welcome addition to a landscape that's almost entirely about teenagers falling blushingly in love for the first time, often with a camera ogling their thighs in a way that's not consistent with character point-of-view. Those series can be lovely and sweet but tend to fall by the wayside by midseason for me, so I'm happy to see something that's a bit more tailored to my interests.
The novel that inspired the series, Roadside Picnic, is titled for an analogy between the aliens who came to Earth and left behind the ruined zones, and humans having a picnic and leaving behind litter and trampled grass. Otherside Picnic, with its focus on Sorao's state of mind and incorporation of urban legends, turns the metaphor inward. At the opening of the episode, Sorao is lying in the grass, prepared for death and reflecting on how no one will notice she's gone until her student loans go into collection. She feels empty and haunted, just like the landscape around her.
That metaphor is what makes her relationship with Toriko as powerful as it is. The vivacious extrovert and depressed introvert may be a pretty typical dynamic for a main pairing, but neither girl feels totally built on stereotypes either. I enjoyed their connection, although I do think their chemistry could have come through stronger.
The visuals are a mixed bag as well. The hand-drawn stuff looks great, with plenty of personality to its character acting, and the Otherside is appropriately eerie and atmospheric. However, there's some use of CG, and it varies from pretty cool and effective to honestly kind of baffling. The shapeless, ever-shifting monster they call the wiggle-waggle is spooky and effective, and even when it doesn't look great, it at least looks weird. However, for some reason there are some CG shots of Toriko and Sorao just moving through the landscape, and I cannot for the life of me understand why they did that because it looks terrible.
There's been a real lack of queer genre fiction in anime lately. Otherside Picnic would be a welcome addition to the season in any case, but in that light, I'm all the more excited to explore it.
