6 places to visit in Kandy – Culture, nature and all other pleasures

The city of Kandy which was once a royal Kingdom is today, a popular tourist destination. Located 115km away from Colombo, Kandy is also the second-largest city in Sri Lanka. To please you and your senses, this vibrant city has many attractions that you shouldn't miss during your tour.

1

Sri Dalada Maligawa

This main attraction in Kandy is also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. It houses the sacred relic of the tooth of Lord Buddha, and this is why this temple becomes very significant for Buddhists around the world. This majestic temple that has been built in the 17th century is today a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.

2

Kandy National Museum

You are already aware that Kandy was once a royal kingdom. The building occupied by the museum today was the former royal palace, and when you go inside you find many weapons and other exhibits. It's located right next to the Temple of Tooth Relic, so you may cover both these attractions in one go.

3

The Kandy Lake

If you travel to Kandy and just miss wandering around Kandy Lake in one evening, that'll be a true loss. It's always a great idea to enjoy a troll when it's not too hot while enjoying all the beautiful views. There are some bench areas for you to stop by and you may buy a bag of pickle ('achcharu' they call it!) and enjoy your moments as you wish. Let the views make you forget all your worries for a while!

4

Royal Botanical Gardens

You will need to come to Peradeniya (located not so away from Kandy) to enjoy the beauty of the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. If you visit the garden during the season, you'll be able to see huge collections of roses, orchids, and many rare kinds of flowers. Take beautiful pictures of them and keep them as colourful memories to remember your Kandy tour.

5

Udawattakele Forest Reserve

Located not so far away from the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the Udawattakele Forest Reserve. They say this area was used by the members of the Royal family in ancient times, but today, it's a forest reserve that also has a Buddhist monastery inside. There is an entrance fee to enter this attraction, but it's all worth it considering the peaceful experiences it grants. Make sure you don't tease back at the monkey friends you find here, and that you don't make loud noises as the monks may be meditating at the nearby Buddhist monasteries.

6

Bahirawakanda Viharaya

Popular online sources such as Kandy Escapes invites you to visit the largest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka, so why don't you take the chance to enjoy this awesome moment?
