Fires kill about 3,500 Americans each year and injure about 18,300. Many Utah families do not know the importance of having a fire escape plan. You want to spend the least amount of time as possible in the house so having a plan is very important. Preparation is key. Here is a list of considerations when you are coming up with a fire escape plan.
Your family should have a fire drill at least once a month. This should include learning ways of escaping from every room in the house.
When your house is on fire time is not on your side. The quicker you can get out the better. Do not bother saving personal property. If you put it in a fireproof safe it will be fine.
Feeling a door with the back of your hand will allow you to feel the temperature of it. If it is hot do not open it. You will be fueling the fire to move to other parts of the house quicker.
Designate a certain area that is a safe distance from the house for everyone to meet. Once there make sure each person has made it out. It may also be a good idea to send one person to a neighbor’s to call 911.
Once you have all gotten safely out of the house, stay out. You are only putting yourself in danger by going back in. Firefighters are trained and have the proper equipment to go into a fire so wait for them and let them know if someone is missing.
Fire escape plans are essential to making sure everyone gets out safely. This should not be taken lightly. And if there are any documents or valuables that you are worried about in case of a fire make sure to put it in the fireproof safe. Utah has several places where you can purchase a fireproof safe.
