05 Tips on Baby Proofing Your Apartment – A Safe Haven for Little Ones

As most parents are bound to tell you, once a baby reaches a stage where they can crawl or walk, you will be faced with a whole new set of challenges! This is true even in apartments where baby proofing one's living space is vital; here are some tips to help you do just that.

1

Ensure Electrical Outlets Are Covered

Anything on the floor level is fair game for a baby and unfortunately, that includes electrical outlets! You will have a time keeping tabs on where your baby is crawling to and if they will stick their fingers into such outlets. With this in mind, it is best to cover unused outlets beforehand; even if it is being used, it is better to block access to it and any power cords that a baby may try put in his or her mouth. An easy option would be to buy baby-safe outlet covers including those with sliding panels.

2

Be Mindful of Sharp Edges & Corners

Chances are your baby is going to take a tumble from time to time or bump into stuff at a walking stage. The last thing you want is for him / her to bang or fall onto furniture that has sharp edges or corners. Choosing round furniture over square-shaped ones is an option to consider. You can also buy corner guards / protectors which are made from foam and will cover those pesky edges. It also helps if there is space for the baby to move around; for example, when living in Colombo, staying at a spacious apartment with modern design the likes of those at TRI-ZEN, give a baby room to explore within a safe space.

3

Put Baby Proof Locks on the Cabinet

Babies can be quite curious which is a good thing when it comes to learning but not so good when you need them to stay away from opening cabinets or low drawers! This is especially true in places like the kitchen where you may keep everything from sharp appliances to cleaning chemicals. To overcome this problem, you can put baby proof locks on cabinets which will help to ensure babies don't inadvertently open them even during those few seconds they may be unattended.

4

Consider Moving the Houseplants

Houseplants are amongst the other hazards you want your baby or toddler to stay away from. Unfortunately, they are within easy reach of the ground and sometimes the soil can be quite an allure to little ones who may not think twice about putting it into their mouths too! If you have a balcony, consider if the houseplants can be moved outdoors or better yet, find a place to hang them from the ceiling.

5

Hide or Remove Hazardous Items

The best way to do this is to get a baby's point of view for which you will need to be on your hands and knees to inspect an area of the apartment! This way you can see exactly what items are within reach and need to be removed or at least moved for the time being. This can include fragile items like ceramics, crystal or glass or small objects like nails or wires which a baby may come across and give a taste test as well.
