Top 7 Newbie Diving Mistakes – Learn Mindful Diving

When we're diving for the first time, more often than not, it's pretty typical that we mess up – well, who hasn't been there! However, as first time-divers, it would at least help to know what mistakes you tend to make during your first few diving sessions. Here are the top 10!

1

Forgetting the buoyancy check

It is advised to check your buoyancy before diving to ensure that you're weighted appropriately. If this goes unchecked, you will feel that you're over-weighted or under-weighted while diving. Whether you have gained or lost weight, bought a new wet suit, and has a different BCD than the last time you were practising, or if there's the slightest chance that would make your weight differ, make sure that you do a buoyancy check before you get into the water.

2

Neglecting your limits

It's quite easy to be swept up in the adrenaline-induced excitement at the prospect of exploring the majestic underwater kingdom, located close to your Maldives resort such as Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences. Probably you'll also have that added sense of safety as your instructor will be alongside you. However, make sure that you stick to the guidelines set by your diving instructor. Only attempt diving in wrecks and inside caves after you acquire the necessary skill level.

3

Lack of communication

From early on in your diving lessons, instructors will teach you how you can communicate with your diving partners underwater. Always be aware and keep tabs on your partner's location and their air supply as well as your own. Before diving, go over your hand signals so there's less confusion once you're underwater.

4

Not focusing on the bigger picture

New divers may focus on their equipment or a beautiful fish passing nearby; however, they might miss the current that might be pushing them down. Not being aware of the depth is another problem – wall dives, which are considered one of the best things to do in Maldives, are particularly prone for this mishap since divers entranced by the stunning marine life may face an unnoticed descent.

5

Straining on the surface

Diving gear can be quite uncomfortable on the surface. Amateur divers tend to forget that they can inflate their BCD, or the Buoyancy Compensating Device, and relax while on the surface.

6

Attempting a lot on the first dive

Although it makes sense that you should take tonnes of pictures when you're near an exquisite reef with splendid marine life, doing so can be deleterious during your first dive. New divers have so much to deal with, wearing new equipment in a completely strange environment. Therefore, carrying expensive cameras and lighting equipment will be an additional burden until you're familiar with the new gear and environment.

7

Not equalising soon enough

It is important to keep equalising every couple of feet during your descend to the beautiful marine wonderland, particularly during the first 30 feet. It is sensible to start equalising before you feel the pressure of any kind as once you start experiencing pain in your ears, it would be difficult – and almost impossible – to equalise your ears.
