Unwind at Lake Gregory

Amongst the most popular family attractions in Nuwara Eliya is the picturesque Lake Gregory which offers an ideal spot for a fun day out. Located in the heart of town, this lake was constructed by Governor William Gregory in the 1870s during the British colonial period. Today, the lake and the lovely lush landscapes that surround it are perfect for relaxing and even enjoying some water sports. Jet-skiing, paddle boating, boat rides, cycling and pony rides for kids can be enjoyed here, while there are spots for picnics too.

Wander Around Victoria Park

Another spot where nature's beauty abounds is Victoria Park. Those staying at well-placed holiday bungalows in Nuwara Eliya can easily plan a visit to this site known for its idyllic garden landscapes and manicured lawns which one can explore. Named after Queen Victoria on the occasion of her 60th jubilee coronation, the park is particularly popular from March to May and then again between August and September when its gorgeous flowers are in full bloom. There is a mini train and a playground for kids, while one can enjoy some birdwatching here too.

Explore Nuwara Eliya Town

One of the best things to do in Nuwara Eliya is to explore the town which is a great way to experience its old-world charm. Ideally, be based a bit away from the bustling town, but close enough to easily visit with properties the likes of Scottish Planter Glendevon Bungalow amongst the options to consider. On your wanderings, you will pass colonial-era bungalows and historical buildings like the post office built in the style of a Tudor manor. You can shop at the Bale Bazaar known for its winter wear and look to eat fresh strawberries too!

Visit Local Tea Plantations

Nuwara Eliya is known for its many tea plantations where the famed Ceylon Tea is produced. Not to be missed is a chance to tour one of these plantations and their onsite factories. Some tours will show you the delicate art of picking tea leaves as well as include a factory tour where you can see the step by step process. Best of all is the chance to savour a fresh cup of Ceylon Tea at the end of your visit and purchase some tea to take back home as souvenirs.

Plan Outdoor Excursions

This destination also makes an ideal base from which to plan some exciting excursions to key sites in and around the area. One of the things you can do is to head off on waterfall hopping trips visiting attractions like St. Clair's Falls, Ramboda Falls, Devon Falls and Glen Falls. Within easy reach of the town is Hakgala Botanical Gardens with its many flowering plants that burst into colour between April and August, while further afield is the enchanting Horton Plains National Park.
