A key destination in the area known as the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka, Dambulla offers fascinating insights into the history of the island as well as its natural treasures. Here are some of the top places to visit in and around this enchanting town.

Golden Temple of Dambulla

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the magnificent Golden Temple of Dambulla is one of the most captivating historical attractions in Sri Lanka. This Buddhist temple which is revered by devotees is also the country's best-preserved cave temple complex with much to explore. Amongst the main draws here are five ancient caves which are said to date back to the 1st century BC; subsequently converted into shrines, the caves are home to various paintings as well as statues of Lord Buddha, the deities Saman and Vishnu and kings from days of old.

Sam Popham's Arboretum

Sam Popham's Arboretum is a most captivating attraction near Dambulla. Hotels and resorts within easy reach of this site offer guests a great opportunity to explore an arboretum that is spread across more than 30 acres. The forest that has been created here with dry zone tropical trees provides a lovely day out in nature; as you stroll along the paths you may come across wildlife too like dragonflies, butterflies, various bird species, spotted deer and rock squirrels. There's also a special night walk where you have the chance of spotting the nocturnal Slender Loris.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

While the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress is not in the town itself, it is quite nearby and is a must-visit when here. When planning a visit, consider staying at properties like Aliya Resort & Spa which provide easy access to both Dambulla and Sigiriya. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is an awe-inspiring fortress that occupies a 660-foot high rock. Set amidst water gardens and ancient moats, the site offers a memorable ascent to the top; you will come across rock frescoes, two huge carvings of lion paws and ruins of a royal palace at the summit where stunning vistas also await.

Kaludiya Pokuna Forest

Those who love outdoor adventures can plan a visit to the Kaludiya Pokuna Forest which also features an archaeological site that dates back to the 2nd century BC. An ideal spot for a trek amidst nature, the forest area leads to two ponds which are said to have water that was dark in colour, which is reflected in the name "Kaludiya Pokuna". You will also find remains of an old monastery along with ancient inscriptions and may even spot various wildlife from monkeys to birds.

Jathika Namal Uyana

Locally known as "Jathika Namal Uyana", this area has two distinctive highlights; South Asia's largest pink quartz mountain and ironwood forest! Within easy reach of Dambulla and Sigiriya, the site is listed as a National Forest Reserve; it is home to ironwood trees, herbal plants with medicinal properties, archaeological ruins and wildlife including deer, elephants and monkeys. Here, you will also find the Pink Quartz Mountain said to be over 550 million years old and which offers breathtaking panoramas from the summit.
