Located in eastern China, the city of Wuxi lies beside Taihu Lake and offers an unforgettable getaway; there is much to explore here from historic sites to picturesque gardens each with their own fascinating stories. These are some of the not to be missed attractions in Wuxi.
Dating back more than 2,500 years, the Grand Canal in China is the world's longest artificial canal and part of it runs through Wuxi. Also known as the Jing–Hang Grand Canal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an ideal place to visit on your holiday. Those heading to the Wuxi section of the Grand Canal will find a serene setting along with ancient houses by the banks as well as age-old temples, shrines and pagodas. The Qingming Bridge is a key area of this site and one way to explore this part of the canal is to take a scenic boat tour.
Located in Xihui Park which is an attraction in its own right (more on that later on), Jichang Garden offers an idyllic backdrop for a relaxing day out in nature. Centrally located accommodation options including an apartment which is an ideal alternative to Wuxi hotels, can be found within easy reach of this site. The garden with its beautiful landscapes and hills dates back to the Ming dynasty; it features charming design elements like a pond and rockery near the Qixing Bridge and Zhiyu, Hanbi and Yupan pavilions.
Situated at the base of Huishan Mountain, Huishan Ancient Town is another key attraction that one should look to visit. Only around a 10-minute drive from properties such as Ascott Central Wuxi, this historical town is also where part of the previously mentioned Grand Canal flows through. Travellers wandering around Huishan Ancient Town will come across many ancient ancestral halls as well as shrines and temples. Among the other highlights would be to visit a workshop to see how Huishan clay figures are made and savour delectable local snacks from jellied bean curd to buns with steamed crab meat.
Initially known as the Huguo Temple, the ancient Nanchan Temple can be found at the city's South Gate. One of the most captivating things to do in Wuxi would be to head to this sacred site which features a seven-storey pagoda that offers some wonderful views of the area from up top. Other features include the Great Buddha's Hall and the Hall of Heavenly Kings, while one can observe activities of devotees and explore a lively market located close by too.
Home to the previously mentioned Jichang Garden, the scenic area called Xihui Park provides more outdoor exploration amidst stunning natural backdrops. It can be found at the base of two mountains, Mount Xi and Mount Hui, and is home to historical temples and sites too. Among the attractions are the Dragon Light Pagoda, Huishan Temple and the Second Spring Under Heaven; there's even a cable car to Mount Hui's summit. Also of note is Xihui Garden which showcases characteristics and design of an old Chinese garden.
