Strategies for Teaching Culturally Diverse Students

Dr. Sherri Valentine created this educational video to equip teachers with a set of strategies for teaching culturally diverse students. I will use this video and take strategy advice to teach my students. The video gives a couple of reflective questions at the end to help better understand as well.

Diversity

This is a video that shares a very good message. I would use this video in my classroom to get the message to my students. Everyone deserves respect, everyone is equal, and everyone is worthy. No matter what you look like.

This is a kids story that basically uses an umbrella to tell kids in a cute simple way that all people no matter who is welcome. I would leave this book in my classroom for all students to read and make the connection.

The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies - New Edition

Princeton University Press
This book "redefines the way we understand ourselves in relation to one another. The Difference is about how we think in groups — and how our collective wisdom exceeds the sum of its parts. Why can teams of people find better solutions than brilliant individuals working alone? And why are the best group decisions and predictions those that draw upon the very qualities that make each of us unique? The answers lie in diversity — not what we look like outside, but what we look like within, our distinct tools and abilities." -overview

"The ninth edition of Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness examines a given health care consumer’s intangible cultural heritage, diverse HEALTH beliefs and practices, the relevant issues within the modern health care system, and the impact of the demographic changes that exist within North America and globally." I chose this book because it is important to make sure all of your students are okay, and what to look for.

Same, Same but Different - Movies on Google Play

Elliot lives in America, and Kailash lives in India. They are pen pals. By exchanging letters and pictures, they learn that they both love to climb trees, have pets, and go to school. Their worlds might look different, but they were actually similar. Same, same - but different! This is a great little movie to show your students. It helps set an understanding that no matter where you are, our similarities bring us together as well as our differences.
