Ring x Ring Denim & its Role in the Circular Economy for a Sustainable Future

Ring x Ring, or dual ring spun, is the traditional method for producing denim which uses ring spun yarn both for warp and weft – and is created by rolling rather than pressing the fibres into shape. It has an uneven look and feel (slub) that is considered more valuable and unique than open-ended denim, and it also combines its properties of a soft, silk like hand with sheer strength and durability. These qualities, matched with its characterful slub, mean that Ring x Ring lends itself well to ageing – almost like wood bark.

And with dual ring spun not only does the hand and feel of the fabric last as if forever, if anything it gets better with age - like a fine wine.

So, when it's outgrown it's wearer, it is ripe for being repurposed, and re-used.

Of course, Ring x Ring denim isn’t that single one stop solution to the great, ongoing conundrum of sustainability and denim. Although denim that’s capable of being loved and lived in for longer is certainly part of the key, a notable step in the right direction.

What is also needed is a seismic [industry-wide] shift to unpick the status quo re our ideas around profitability - and to recalibrate our measure of success more holistically.

And it starts from the very farming of the cotton..

It also involves the dyeing and the [industrial] laundry stage, then to how the jeans are packaged delivered and sold, and then again – to the after life of the jeans and what’s to be done with them once they’re worn out or no longer required.

And, at the end of the day, the longer our jeans are loved and lived in, the longer their life cycle.
