Top 3 Things I Like and Hate to See From My Car Window

When I'm stressed from work, down on my luck, or just fed up with life, I enjoy a relaxing drive to calm my nerves. That being said, the kind of experience I have is often dependent not on my music, soda, or fellow passengers, but the sights and people I see as I drive along. The following is a list of my top three best and worst images which I commonly see while driving around, where you commonly find them, and why they are so fantastic or sadly moronic.

1

Beautiful Nature

Beautiful Nature

There are few times in my life when a majestic look of nature at her best can't get me out of some emotional rut. The trees, birds, animals, and water remind me that life goes on, and so can I. You'd think I'd be more used to such sights seeing how I grew up in Utah, but I nevertheless find wonders every time I look for them. Some of my favorite spots are Angel's Landing in Zion's National Park, Payson Lake during the week when no one else is around, and The Grotto, a small waterfall hiking trail just up one of Utah's many canyons. Not only the areas themselves, but even the ride to reach them is often breathtaking, full of greens, and browns, and blues. Ford Trucks and Cars do a beautiful job of helping you explore the relatively untamed wild. If you're feeling down, just drive your car up one of the many mountain roads in our state, and I guarantee you will feel better when you get back.

2

Garbage and Pollution

Garbage and Pollution

Ugh, the one thing which can easily ruin a natural setting is someone throwing their cigarette bud, or used tissue out their car window with no consideration to anyone behind them. We all see that stuff piling up against the inner guard rails, and not only is it disgusting, but it can be downright dangerous. If the smoggy air of the Valley weren't bad enough, people have to just go along and mess up the ground we walk on as well. Seriously, be considerate with your garbage. There's a place for everything you would rather throw out onto the ground, and it's called a garbage bin.

3

Beautiful People

Beautiful People

What can I say, there's a reason why beautiful people control the world, and get all the breaks: they're just more fun to look at. Whether it is someone walking down the street or the hot chic in the car next to your own, hormones do their work, and give you a nice reason to smile. Now, I'm not talking about stalking people while driving 66 on Utah's highways, or cruising down Main Street in your used Tundra, but seeing someone who looks nice can be an added bonus if you're figuratively out of gas. A car provides an easy way to see a wide range of people, and if you see something you like, you might as well enjoy it as it adds to your ride.

4

Flipping the Bird

Flipping the Bird

Quiet possibly those same beautiful people should they feel annoyed at you looking too long or too strangely at them, I've run into quite the number of angry Utahns who enjoy pointing upwards with their middle finger. Whether they are just used to doing so to everyone they meet, or they don't like my car, I'll never know. What I do understand, however, is that I have been flipped off in every kind of circumstance thinkable, from being passed by someone going 20 over the speed limit on the right to pulling out of a parking lot just a bit too slowly for someone behind me. It's a very popular motion, and frankly, it makes me feel sad sometimes. I mean, seriously guys, let's just all get along. It's an overused motion which really means very little, if anything, in modern Utah, and you'll likely never see that same person ever again. Get off of the bandwagon and either come up with something new, or at least treat other human beings with a bit of decency rather than defaulting on being a jerk.

5

Dogs in Cars

Dogs in Cars

I specify here because it's one thing to see a dog on the sidewalk, but it is an entirely greater feeling of job to see an adorably pup sticking its head out of a car's window near you. Fortunately for me, plenty of people in Utah travel with their furry friends, and I get to see all sorts of canines as I commute to just about anywhere. Their big old tails wagging, and their pointy ears flapping reminds me of a joyful feeling which can only be described as innocence. These little creatures have adapted well to modern society in Utah, and if you own one, I hope you treat him/her well. That's where the worst thing I hate to see while in my car comes in: animal abuse. Dogs and all pets aren't like a used car which you can use and abuse until you get a new one; they are powerful little lives which exist for the sole purpose of being your companion, so respect and care for them as such. Nevertheless, whether it is for nostalgia, visual adorability, or just because I like dogs, I really can't say, but seeing dogs (treated well) in cars always makes my day a little brighter and my drive a little better.

We're all sharing this little state of Utah together, and we sometimes forget that we can help or hinder the people and world around us just by the simplest of actions. Why not try to do the right thing, and brighten someone's smile by dancing in your own car, or forgiving that one driver you disagree with? The world, your fellow drivers, and dogs everywhere will thank you for making their drive just a little more enjoyable.
