Yangon is the tourist central in Myanmar because of the wonderful historic attractions and food exploration opportunities it offers. Here are some of the most amazing places to visit when you are in Yangon.

Shwedagon Pagoda

This is one of the most iconic attractions in the city and the best place to visit. You can't visit Yangon and not visit this sacred place. The main stupa rises high with a plating of gold covering the entire structure. Around the main structure are several spires which have also been adorned in gold. The local devotees believe that relics of Lord Buddha are being sheltered inside the 105-metre tall pagoda.

Sule Pagoda

This Pagoda might not be as popular as Shwedagon Pagoda, nonetheless, it is alluring with its bright appearance in the city. Perhaps you could take a walk around the Sule Pagoda. It is also situated close to other attractions like City Hall, Maha Bandoola Park and Immanuel Baptist Church. If you are staying at a hotel in Yangon this attraction is within easy reach.

Chauk Htet Kyi Pagoda

This is another must-visit and is well-known for its massive statue of the Reclining Buddha which is 65 metres in length. There is so much of detail involved with the crafting of the statue to make it look absolutely extraordinary. When observing the statue, make sure to focus more on the feet of the statue as there are 108 unique patterns that symbolise all the past lives of Buddha. You can also visit Ngar Htet Gyi Pagoda, locates on the opposite side to view the statue of the sitting Buddha.

Swal Taw

The is a small temple that has been constructed to shelter the Sacred Tooth of Lord Buddha. This temple isn't visited much by crowds, therefore the atmosphere here is rather calm and peaceful. You will be able to admire the architecture and other works of art with no hassle at all.

Taw Gyi Temple

This is a temple that was built in 2002 and the statue of the sitting Buddha here has been sculpted completely out of white marble. Inside the temple, you will find whiter elephants too.

Saint Mary's Cathedral

With an amazing façade, this church is the largest in Yangon. You can take your time exploring the beauty of this place of worship.

Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue

Mushmeah Yeshua Synagogue is the only Jewish place of worship for the entire district of Yangon. Although it is small, there is so much history that surrounds the place.

Dishes to try

The local dishes are definitely worth exploring. You can start with a bowl of mohinga which is rice noodle soup. The rice noodles are served in fish soup with sides of your choice. You can pick from fried dough, fried fish cakes, fried gourd or Mandalay beans. Laphat Thote is a salad that is also called tea leaf salad. This can be found at small eateries, tea shops and even at hotels like PARKROYAL Yangon. Kyay-Oh is vermicelli soup with a meat of your choice, but chicken is the most popular. These three dishes are the most loved here.
