6 Must-try food items in Dubai – Set off on an Arabian culinary journey

If you are travelling to Dubai, be it on business or leisure, food is something that you will always have time to explore here. Dubai might be a little over the top expensive, but culinary options are always available in plenty and more affordable than you think.

Stuffed Camel

This is currently known in the World Guinness Book of World Records as the largest food that you could ever eat. But indeed, is a scrumptious delight and a traditional dish in Dubai. Camel is usually a protected species but is only consumed at very special occasions such a Bedouin weddings. The meat is stuffed with eggs, fish, chicken, sheep and spices. Once stuffed the meat is cooked on a spit in the open flame where the flavours begin to mix. It is quite a rich dish to indulge in.

Shawarma

This is one of the most loved Arabian foods that has snuck its way into Delhi, New York, Tokyo and many more places. But the real experience comes when you try it in Dubai! This is quite like a wrap that is made from Arabian flatbread. The filling includes slow-roasted meat which has been well marinated. Moreover, the filling may also include fries, vegetables, garlic sauce and the list goes on and on. Many of the places to eat in Dubai will have this item on the menu.

Al Harees

Al Harees is a dish that needs a lot of patience and love to cook. Wheat and meat are mixed together in a pot with a little salt. Then it is stirred and cooked till the mixture is so smooth that you can't tell the meat from the wheat. It is then put to bake. It is certainly a delicious dish and often served up at Ibn Battuta restaurants.

Mehalabiya

This is a very light Arabian dessert that symbolises the very land it comes from. With the fusion of pistachios and rosewater, the taste of Mehalabiya represents an oasis in the desert. It is the perfect dessert for a refreshing touch after dinner. The dessert is commonly loved by children and isn't too sweet either. Did it pique your interest? It is certainly a must-try dessert.

Ghuzi

This is the national dish of the UAE and is also known as Khuzi or Ouzi. Your culinary journey isn't complete without trying out this dish. Mutton or lamb is whole roasted and served on a kebab with vegetables and hazelnuts along with rice. This is considered a meal by itself and is an amazing one at that.

Matchbous

This is one of the most flavoursome dishes you will find in Dubai. Lamb is marinated with a spice the locals call loomi which is prepared with ripe limes dried and dressed in saltwater. The marinated lamb is then stewed with rice and tomatoes where the flavours are drawn out further. The dish has a very sharp and rich taste to and can be found at restaurants by hotels like Oaks Ibn Battuta Gate Dubai.
