Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is located 12 km away from Oaks Brisbane Mews Suites. It was first opened in 1927 as a sanctuary for koalas and kangaroos that have been injured or orphaned. Today it is home to over 130 of these animals. One of the main reasons why this sanctuary would be a hit with children is that it allows for you to have a meet and greet with the wild animals who reside there. It is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily and have a different ticket price for adults and another for children. There is a lot of effort put by the sanctuary towards the conservation of the local wildlife.

Walkabout Creek Wildlife Centre

A wildlife sanctuary that you can head to without driving for a while from one of the Brisbane hotels is the Walkabout Creek Wildlife Centre. There are trails which you would enjoy if you are the type that likes hikes. There are two paths; one is called the Araucaria Track and is great for ornithologists. The other is 1.5 km long, called the Corymbia Circuit and takes about 40 minutes. Apart from koalas and kangaroos, you can also meet some platypuses in their natural habitat.

4

Brisbane Valley Ostrich and Fish Farm

Opened in 1992, this farm is a petting zoo where you can actually hang out with the animals that include emu, ostriches, white swans, peacocks and ducks as well as fish. It is open from 9 am to 4 pm but you will need to speak to the owner about the time you spend at the farm. It is an especially great place for little children.

5

Brisbane Forest Park

The Brisbane Forest Park is free to enter and is always open. It is part of the gigantic D'Aguilar National Park which is roughly 55,000 hectares wide. There are plenty of trekking paths if you would fancy a walk into the very cusp of nature, and who wouldn't? It is almost a slice of paradise with heavily wooded forests, vast and picturesque lakes and Mount Nesbo for those mountain enthusiasts. If you would like to spend some time exploring the park you should make a day trip out of it and maybe bring a picnic with you too when you go. Keep in mind that it might be a bit too strenuous for smaller children.
