Adelaide is often overlooked when comparing the capital cities of Australia's many states. But the truth is that there is so much to discover in this city, particularly if you are travelling with children. There is a plethora of kid-friendly activities to do and here are the top 5.

Visit Rundle Mall

While Rundle Mall may look like your basic big city mall, there are some things inside you should be checking out of you are staying in one of the Adelaide hotels with your children. While it won't keep your kids busy for a long time, you can choose to let them visit Haigh's which is one of the first chocolate stores to open in Australia. Then they can nip down to the Regent Arcade which was originally opened in 1928. There are some bizarre and unusual games they can check out.

Haigh's Chocolate Tour

Mentioned above is Haigh's Chocolate Store. If you would like it and if your children are partial towards chocolate, don't miss the Haigh's Chocolate Tour. It operates between 9 am and 2.30 pm from Monday to Saturday. The tour will not be held at their flagship Rundell Mall store but as the factory is quite a small place it would be a great location to take your children. It is also completely free as long as you book ahead to guarantee you and your kids a place.

Adelaide Central Market

You'd be surprised that another place to take children in Adelaide is the Central Market. It is located a quick drive from Avani Adelaide Residences. It is also a place with a history, having first opened in 1869. The market is a great place to fill your kids up with healthy and fresh food that is locally sourced and produced. The market is closed on Sundays and Mondays but otherwise, it is open from around 7 or 9 am until 5 pm. Make sure you head out with your children.

Adelaide Botanical Gardens

Opened just a few years before the Adelaide Central Market, the Adelaide Botanical Gardens is another place you can take your kids out to for a day of fun. It is open during weekdays and is 51 hectares of different kinds of gardens that are home to a plethora of spectacular plants. There is also a Little Sprouts Kitchen for young children where they can learn about plants and where the food we eat comes from. Considered an imperative part of the formative education of young children, especially in this day and age, the Botanical Gardens should be a must-visit site on your list of places to go to in Adelaide with your children.

Glenelg

Glenelg is the little French city on the Mediterranean for the citizens of Adelaide. A small seaside town located right on the bay, it is a quick drive from the city and makes for a great weekend getaway for the children. There is an amusement park and a beachside park and plenty of calm seas for the kids to wallow in.
