Must-know top 5 facts about Singapore Sports Hub’s National Stadium – One of the world’s best event venues

If you've seen this 55,000-capacity stadium, then you'll realise the tremendous amount of work that has gone into it. If you'd like to know a few facts about the National Stadium in Singapore, read on for more.

1

It's part of a sports complex

This stadium is part of a huge sports hub in Singapore which boasts world-class facilities. The entire complex spreads across 35-hectares. The complex consists of a multi-purpose arena, water sports centre and an Olympic-sized aquatic centre. The Singapore Sports Museum and the Kallang Wave shopping mall are places within the hub that add even more value. You might just want to spend a whole weekend here.

2

A weather shield

In Singapore whenever it rains, its always a heavy shower and you'll be drenched in no time. But now you can sit and watch the games at the National Stadium without a hitch. Why? Of course, it's because of modern architecture and its benefits. The stadium has its own weather shield. The roof is retractable and protects about 95% of the seats inside converting the stadium into an indoor one. The roof takes about 20 minutes to open and close. The roof also acts as a giant projector screen.

3

An innovative cooling system

Can you possibly imagine how much power and energy it might take to keep a crowd of about 55,000 people cool and comfortable? If the stadium was air-conditioned the cost would have been huge. But thanks to advancements in technology and a couple of smart minds, a system known as the bowl cooling system was invented. Air of about 23 degrees Celsius is constantly passed from under the seats. The system uses less than 15% of the energy that would have been taken for a normal air conditioning system. The fact that half of it works on solar energy makes it eco-friendly too.

4

Retractable seats

The stadium is as versatile as any event venue can get! The last row of seats is automatically retractable making it the only venue in the world where rugby games, cricket, football, concerts community events and pretty much any kind of outdoor event can be held. Furthermore, the stadium is even located close enough to best-value hotels in Singapore. For example, its just 5 minutes away from Destination Singapore Beach Road.

5

Breaking records

This structure was recognised as the world's largest dome structure after its completion. The dome is a whopping 312 metres in diameter beating the Cowboys Stadium in the US. But as if this wasn't enough, the opening ceremony that took place on the 28th of June 2014 also had another surprise in mind. The Singapore Chinese Orchestra broke yet another world record on that day. It was the largest Chinese Drum Ensemble with as many as 4557 musicians performing from various community groups and music schools. However, this record in the Guinness Book of World Records was late taken over by Hong Kong Federation of Young Groups with a performance at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
