5 Reasons to Fall in Love with Dongguan – Here’s why travellers are lured in

Being one of the cities in the Pearl Delta of China, it is quite densely populated. Within the city are also a lot of attractions that will tell you more about Chinese culture and history. Here are a few places and facts that will make you fall in love with Dongguan.

1

Keyuan Garden

This is Dongguan's most treasured piece of history that comes from the Qing Dynasty and was built in 1850. It was passed onto the governor of Jiangsu and Guangxi. The governor took his chance to show his appreciation for the Chinese Culture by hosting parties that revolved around calligraphy, Chinese chess, tea, the appreciation of women and discussions on philosophy. The entire complex and the lake have been well preserved, and it is a great place to add to your list if you are visiting Dongguan.

2

Central Square

China is famous for its squares...no, not the shape but a public space where people can hang out and have a sing-song or watch some dama dancing. Perhaps you can even join in a session of tai chi. The place is loaded with things to do. You could either watch Swan Lake at the Yulan Theatre or read a book at the library or sit out and take in the surroundings and mainly the red twister that has now become the symbol of Dongguan.

3

Value for money

When it comes to accommodation, that's where value for money actually counts. There are Dongguan serviced apartments which can be found for the lowest price possible. Food is really easy to come by and is so cheap. You will spend about 4 times what you spend in Dongguan in Beijing. If you are good at bargaining you will even be able to get a taxi ride for the cheapest amount possible. The destination is perfect for budget travellers.

4

Lychees

If you don't try eating anything else in Dongguan, you've at least got to try a few lychees. This is the place that has been recognised for its unique and tasty produce of lychees. If you are visiting in mid-summer, this is the best time to eat lychees when it is sweet and fleshy. Take one bite and you'll love the beautiful fruity flavour that greets your palate. If you want to pluck them straight off the trees, visit, Dalang, Liaobu Hengli and Changping in July where you can pick them out yourself and dig in.

5

Cultural melting pot

Dongguan is a city where the population is about 8 million. But out of this 8 million not all are Chinese and from Dongguan. There are people from different parts of China, Ireland, Romania, Israel and even Oregon! This explains why the food culture here might be so diverse. Still, you will be able to enjoy local favourites like Peking duck and Dim Sum at eateries or hotels like Ascott Songshan Lake Dongguan. Chinese tea is also served up with meals. It's not your normal tea so you'll just have to taste it to know.
