5 signs your tires need replacing – Vehicle safety comes first

The performance of your vehicle’s tires will determine the vehicle’s performance and safety on the road. While industrial vehicles don’t often need tire changes, neglecting the condition of the vehicle’s tires could lead to serious accidents and damages. Here are a few tips on how to identify when it’s time to change your tires.

1

The thread is less than 1.5 millimetres deep

When the threads of your tires are less than 1.5 millimetres deep, this means it’s time for them to be replaced. How do you know if they are deep or not? Take a coin and slip it into the grove. If you find that the coin dips in about 2/4 towards the centre, that’s when you know it’s time to take the tires off and fit in new ones.

2

You will notice abnormal bumps or bulges

Sometimes you may come across abnormal bumps or bulges that will be visible on the sidewall of your tires (that is where the brand name can be seen). These are often caused because of increased driving on curbs or potholes. The damage is actually on the inside of the wheel. The fabric of the tire on the inside may have cracked and the air has leaked through to the flexible outer wall of the tire causing a knot of air. Tires like this should be replaced immediately with new construction equipment tires as there is a great risk of tires failing.

3

Your Tread Wear Bar is Visible

This is an easy sign to recognise. When you look at you tires, the space between each thread is called the ‘tread-wear bar’. As the vehicle runs over time, these become flush and even with the tire’s actual thread. When this happens, it is a clear sign that your industrial vehicle needs tire replacements. When purchasing a new set of tires for a large vehicle, it is important that you opt for a good brand like GRI Tires to ensure maximum safety and durability.

4

Your tire is punctured

If you find that your tire is punctured, then you need to carefully consider if it is safe to simply repair is or whether it needs to be replaced. If punctures have appeared on more than one tire, investigate them further. If you find that they are less than 6 millimetres deep, then they should be fine with repairs. If the puncture is more than 6 millimetres deep, then the tire must be replaced. Also, if there are several punctures too close to each other where repairs would overlap, opting for new tires is the best idea.

It’s been more than 10 years

If you’ve been using your car for more than 10 years now, but your tires do not show any of the signs mentioned previously, it’s still better to replace them. Ideally, after 5 years of use, it would be wise to get your industrial tires inspected by a professional technician.
