If you can't be cool, why not buy someone who is? That's what Yahoo is looking to do with a potential $1 billion acquisition of hot blogging service Tumblr, according to AdWeek. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has already presided over several acquisitions as head of the company and just a week ago she snapped up two more startups - GoPollGo and Milewise.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Yahoo's board of directors has approved the company's widely-rumored acquisition of Tumblr in an all-cash deal worth $1.1 billion. Assuming the terms are accepted by Tumblr, CEO Marissa Mayer is all but certain to announce Yahoo's latest pickup - easily its largest to date in a spree of acquisitions and content deals - at a media event tomorrow in New York City.

Pinterest just got an upgrade that could make it easier for users to gather information by navigating in its site. Instead of exclusively linking back to the original source, pins from certain brands will now display information such as recipes, movie reviews and price information.

At almost any given time, it seems, someone is hosting a Twitter chat somewhere. That's what it feels like, anyhow. Besides all the long-running standalone hashtag communities, such as #UsGuys and #SMGirlfriends and #MusicMonday (some of which have their own associated twitter chats), other communities gather together once a week or once a month to discuss specific topics, campaigns, issues, and other assorted interesting things.

Just over one month ago, Tumblr introduced its first in-stream mobile ads, and today, it's bringing the same ads to its website. The "sponsored posts," as they're called, often take the form of Tumblr-friendly images like GIFs of a scene from The Great Gatsby or an animation of a GE jet engine.

Twitter announced that it is updating its List feature, expanding it so that users can now have up to 1,000 lists with a maximum of 5,000 accounts in each one. Update to Twitter lists: You can now make up to 1,000 lists (up from 20), and each list can include up to 5,000 accounts (up from 500).

Google is incorporating nutrition data into search; beginning today, results will include "extensive" details on calories, carbohydrates, proteins, sugars, and other relevant food info. "Figuring out how to make smart choices about some of our favorite foods can often be a cumbersome and daunting process," the company said.

A month after Tumblr introduced sponsored posts into its native mobile applications, the company is today bringing those same brand advertisements to its web dashboard. Launch partners for these new "Sponsored Web Posts," as they're called, include Viacom, Ford Motor Company, Universal Pictures, Capital One, AT&T, Denny's and Purina.
