People don’t usually use more than one word when referring to the crack on their windshield. What many people don’t know is that cracks and chips are categorized and have their own special names! This helps windshield repair professionals determine the best way to repair a specific crack. Here are some of the more unusual types of cracks that a Utah repair specialist may deal with:
This is essentially a regular rock chip, where a little piece of glass is chipped off by a rock. The force of the impact creates a significantly larger crater, making a circular target-like shape. The bull’s eye is pretty common on Utah’s highways, and is easy to repair.
A more unusual shape, it typically occurs when the rock comes from a more extreme angle. It resembles a bull’s eye cut in half.
This crack can start almost anywhere on the windshield, so long as it is at least 2 inches away from the edges. Over time, it slowly spreads across the windshield, hence why it is called a floater crack. If neglected for too long, it may damage the windshield beyond repair.
Unlike the floater, the edge crack starts within 2 inches of the edge of the windshield, and can usually stretch to 12 inches or more.
This one is different from the rest because it is not cause by flying debris. Rather, it occurs when there is an extreme temperature change throughout the day, something that happens often in Utah. This can happen if the car has been sitting in very hot weather and all of a sudden gets a very cold car wash. The same can happen if a driver pours hot water on their windshield to defrost it.
