Majeedhee Magu

Majeedhee Magu is the name of the main road in the Maldives that runs through the island from east to west and is very popular for clothing. Nonetheless, other items such as cosmetics, electronics, perfumes, bags and watches are all available. You will find both international and local brands available here. in case you work up an appetite, you can grab a bite to eat from the many restaurants in the area.

Male Local Market

For a taste of authenticity while you shop, visit the Male Local Market located towards the north of the island. Here is where you will find fresh produce like vegetables and fruits for sale. Try some of the sweet local fruit that tastes amazing while you walk about and admire the local handicrafts. These include miniature dhonis, slippers and brooms made of coconut, wooden lacquer works and seashell items.

Chaandhanee Magu

This street market in the Maldives goes from north to south of the island and is called the Singapore Bazaar. Here you will find imports from Singapore for sale. Miniature dhonis, t-shirts, scarves, Thundu Kunaa mats and sarongs. You will also find a few local items here.

Thundu kunaa

This is a Maldivian mat that is woven by the women on the island. It comes in various shapes and sizes. They are used as décor in at every all-Inclusive Maldives resort. You can buy one and decorate your interior back home as well.

Maldivian sarongs

These sarongs come in vibrant colours and designs and were previously worn by both men and women. The signature Maldivian sarong is called 'Feyli' which has a combination of black and white stripes. This is worn at special occasions and for traditional dance performances.

Dhonis

These were boats that existed in the Maldives from ancient times. They have now been motorised and are used for public transport and to transport various other items. Purchase a miniature dhoni and you'll find that it is quite ornamental for your home while it brings back memories of your very own romantic dhoni ride at resorts like Kandolhu Maldives.

Jewellery

Bracelets, earrings, necklaces and anklets are available made from coconut shells, seeds, ceramic and seashells. However, try not to buy the ones made of shark teeth and coral as these items are illegal.
