Six Things to Do in the Maldives at Night – the nocturnal side of the islands

This island in the Indian Ocean offers experiences like no other and is famed for its authentic beaches, water activities and luxury accommodation options. But is that all there is to the Maldives? This article shows you something that goes beyond all the daytime activities available here. Try at least one of these experiences on your next visit.

1

Candlelit dinners on a private island

Imagine getting whisked away on a private boat to another island just to find a small candlelight dinner waiting for the two of you to enjoy. That's exactly what Maldives all-Inclusive resorts offers guests. Enjoy all your favourite local delights by the ocean and fall in love all over again with your partner and with the islands too. So how is this possible? A few resorts often own the sister island as well. This island will usually be used to set up private dinners and getaways.

2

Explore islands other than your resort island

Most tourists prefer to stay in the luxury of island resorts like VARU by Atmosphere for the entirety of their holiday on the islands. This is completely fine, except that you are missing out on one of the most important aspects of the Maldives – culture! Explore Male and you'll see a whole new side to the islands. Mingle with the locals and catch a glimpse of what daily life is like on the most compact city in the world. explore the city and perhaps even spend the night here in a city hotel. If it gets too late your flight will only be coming in the next morning since seaplanes don't fly at night, so might as well take the chance to enjoy.

3

Visit the glow in the dark beach

This might seem like something out of a fairytale, but indeed this is for real! In some of the islands in the Maldives, this phenomenon can be spotted where small crustaceans called ostracod begin to glow when disturbed by the moving waves. They have been mistaken for plankton where the luminous glow only lasts a few seconds. These crustaceans, however, can glow for about a minute. There are certain times in the year when this happens, mainly during mid-summer and continues to winter. Some islands have it all year round.

4

Night cinemas

This is an extremely popular trend that has hit the Maldivian resorts. Once the sun sets into the ocean, the resorts set up the cinema outside on the terrace with several bean bags for you to lounge and enjoy the movie with a cooler in hand. This might be organised about twice a week. You can also opt for a private outdoor cinema experience with your loved one.

5

Night dives

If you are not an advanced diver then, this is dangerous, but if you do happen to be one, then go ahead and arrange one. The nocturnal animals of the under-water life begin to come out to play and you get to witness it!
