6 Awesome Things to Do Trincomalee, Sri Lanka – why you must visit Trinco

Trincomalee is one of the cities located towards the east of Sri Lanka and is comparatively less developed than the west and south. Still, there is a strange charm to this quiet place and lots of things to do although you may not realise it at first. You can spend about 3 – 4 days just exploring this part of the island. Here's a list of what Trinco offers you.

1

Visit Nilaveli Beach

This is one of the most amazing beaches on the island. The sand is a lighter shade than usual, and the entire beach is clean and unspoiled. The waters are extremely clean as well. During weekdays, there is seldom anyone on the beach, so you are free to spend some peace and quiet on the shores here with just the sound of the waves. You could hire a scooter for the day for about Rs.1500 ride across the roads looking for the small footpaths that lead to secluded parts of the beach.

2

Whale watching

From March to August, the giants of the ocean visit the warm waters of Trincomalee making it the perfect time for whale watching. The experience truly is exhilarating, and you are guaranteed to see a whale for sure. Not only whales but on your way to the deeper trench in the waters of Trinco, you will spot friendly dolphins too jumping in and out of the water to say hello.

3

Chill at a beachside bar

What better time to hit a chill beachside bar than at sunset? Watch the sky change colour with your favourite cooler in hand and simply appreciate what nature has to offer here. If you are staying at a hotel by the beach like Jungle Beach by Uga Escapes, then head over to the beach in the evening for a delightful view of dusk.

4

Visit Sri Pathrakali Amman Kovil

This is an old temple with a colourful exterior. the exterior of the temple has intricately sculptured idols from top to bottom. It is evidence of the skill of local builders here in Sri Lanka. Painted in bright colours, it's almost as if the figurines might move at any time. On the way to this temple, you will see how the locals live in this part of the island. You'll pass loads of places with buckets and buckets of various dried fish. You'll find that life here does not thrive on tourism like the south and that the culture here is slightly more laid back and different.

5

Visit Fort Frederik

This is an age-old fort that was built by the Portuguese, it is occupied by the military today, but you can still explore. It is the ideal place to escape the heat for a while as the entire fort is covered with trees. You can also spot some friendly deer here chilling just the same as you are!

6

Visit Koneswaram Temple

Of all the things to do in Trincomalee, this is definitely unmissable. Enter the temple and you'll see a massive statue of a Hindu god overlooking the cliff. You can see stunning views of the ocean from here as well.
