Renault TRIBER: Keeping Pace With The Changing Times

Very rarely does one find that a revolution in automobile technology was expedited by a Court of Law. This is exactly what happened when the Supreme Court in India made it compulsory for carmakers to introducing BS6 compliant engines for all new vehicles starting 1st April 2020. While BS6 compliant engines were already being designed and tested by most automakers, it was the Supreme Court’s order that made its introduction possible sooner than later.

In the year 2000, India adopted the Bharat Stage (BS) for engine emissions. These standards were inspired by the European Emission (Euro) norms that were prevalent then. Progressively, these standards were made tougher and the standard in place before the court’s order was BS4.

Every internal combustion engine produces smoke when the injected fuel burns. This exhaust consists of gases like Oxides of Nitrogen, Carbon mono-oxide and dioxide, Sulphur, and other particulate matters. The Bharat Stage emission standards defines the permissible levels of each of these elements in the exhaust. For instance, in Bharat Stage-6 (BS6), the Nitrogen Oxide levels for petrol engines have been capped at 60 mg/KM which is 25% less than in BS4. In diesel engines, the same has been reduced to just 80 mg/KM which is 68% lower than in BS4.

Besides improving engine efficiency and encouraging optimal fuel consumption, BS6 attempts to make sure that the environment is least damaged by these cars. Even the fuel has been customized to meet the stringent new BS6 norms.

Unfortunately, the drawback of such tough performance norms is that the engine tends to perform slower. However, with innovations in technology, now even this drawback has been taken care of. Most cars that conform to the BS6 standards perform the same way as their BS4 predecessors, albeit with much better engine efficiency and superior exhaust quality.
