Attractions in the Maldives – The Best Things to See

The scenic Maldives islands hide an abundance of attractions that would surely take one's breath away. From stunning beaches and night diving to cinema under the stars, you'd have a mesmerising array of attractions in which you can be immersed during a vacation in the Maldives.

1

Friday Mosque

The Old Friday Mosque is exquisitely designed in the Maldives. Also known as Malé Hukuru Miskiy, it is also hailed as the oldest mosque in the country. It was built by Ali Maavadi Kaleyfaanu and Mahmud Maavadi Kaleyfaanu. who were expert carpenters at the time. The Old Friday Mosque was built using the coral boulders that you can find scattered around the city. It is believed to have been built in 1658 when Ibrahim Iskandar was ruling the Maldives. In this mosque, you can find a large patterned carpet, which has the capacity to accommodate up to 1372 worshippers if each of them occupied a space on it.

Artificial Beach

A crescent-shaped beach in the capital city, Artificial Beach in the Maldives is a man-made creation that has become one of the best-loved attractions in the Maldives. However, it looks quite natural at first glance and is a great place to just relax and catch up with your loved ones. It's not just blue water that lies close to the beach; several cafés and barbeque areas line the pristine beach that is perfect for all the foodies out there. The beach also has comfortable lounging areas where one can sit back and drink in the views of a killer sunset. Adventure seekers can look forward to the amazing selection of water sports that would get their veins soaked in adrenaline.

3

Kondey

A large inhabited island of Northern Huvadhu Atoll, Kondey is famous for its four ancient Buddhist prayer mounds, or rather, the hawittas. A limestone carving, which is believed to be of the Hindu water god Makara has been discovered from this site by Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl. This finding is quite significant as it confirms the fact that other religions apart from Buddhism existed in the Maldives before Islam. Located on the eastern rim of Huwadu Atoll, it is said that there are other ruins peppered all over the island, which haven't been explored yet.

4

Diving

One of the most mindblowing experiences that you can have in the Maldives is diving beneath its calm waves. You can look forward to exploring an ethereal world beyond its serene façade that is thriving with colours and sights that would keep you rooted for the spot for a while if that's even possible underwater. It would be a timeless experience to glide slowly over the vibrant colonies of coral reefs that are thriving with marine life.
