A large inhabited island of Northern Huvadhu Atoll, Kondey is famous for its four ancient Buddhist prayer mounds, or rather, the hawittas. A limestone carving, which is believed to be of the Hindu water god Makara has been discovered from this site by Norwegian ethnographer Thor Heyerdahl. This finding is quite significant as it confirms the fact that other religions apart from Buddhism existed in the Maldives before Islam. Located on the eastern rim of Huwadu Atoll, it is said that there are other ruins peppered all over the island, which haven't been explored yet.
