Get a brief about the top 10 updates in IBC 2018 that have taken effect to help out during the construction phase of a building.
Happy New Year to all of you! Each year, I like to start out with a column on fire alarm changes for new editions of the codes. We begin with the 2018 International Building Code (IBC). As a reminder, the fire alarm requirements are developed in the International Fire Code (IFC) and copied into the Building Code. More states use the IBC rather than the IFC, so that is why I chose the IBC instead of the IFC.
Changes to the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and 2018 International Existing Buildings Code (IEBC) were approved by the International Code Council (ICC) during their 2015/2016 code development cycle. This article outlines changes to the code requirements for wood construction, the majority of which are changes to the IBC. Only a few changes for exterior balconies involve the IEBC. For this article, all changes noted are to the IBC; any changes to the IEBC will be specifically called out. Accompanying the discussion of each code change is the ICC code change tracking number [colored/bracketed] that can be used to search for more information on the ICC website (iccsafe.org). Appendix A, available in the pdf version of this article and at www.awc.org, contains a strikethrough/underline format of changes where it is deemed helpful to understand the code changes mentioned herein.
