Top 5 things to do in Glenelg – A Seaside Paradise

Glenelg is a seaside suburb found in the South Australian capital of Adelaide. The region's pristine beaches and charming restaurants have made it a popular destination for tourists. So, if you're one of the many who decided to make a stop at Glenelg, here're the top 5 things you can do here.

1

The Glenelg Beach

Few things can beat a visit to the beach while you're here in Glenelg. The climate here in Glenelg is relatively mild – especially when compared to the blistering heat the rest of Australia is known for. As such, the cool and calm atmosphere makes it easy for you to enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities here at the beach. You can have a relaxing picnic here with the family or try your hand at some beach volleyball. You can jump into the water and cool down as well – the water here is calm and just perfect for swimming. As the day begins to wind down, be sure to find a good spot to watch the sunset at. As the sun slowly melts away into the sea, you'll be treated to a stunning array of golden red and yellow hues.

2

The Glenelg Pier

If you're sifting through Glenelg holiday accommodation deals, be sure to pick a place close to the pier – say, for example, the Oaks Glenelg Liberty Suites. This 380-meter-tall Jetty was built in 1859 and has been an iconic landmark of the region. Drop by the pier for some fantastic scenery and a lively atmosphere, especially during sunset.

3

Visiting the Old Gum Tree

In 1836, Colonel William Light and George Strickland Kingston discovered what is now Glenelg on a quest to find new settlement grounds. In December of that year, Captain Hindmarsh arrived aboard the HMS Buffalo and claimed the land – afterwards Glenelg was born. It would become the oldest European settlement founded in South Australia and all of this was proclaimed next to the Old Gum Tree. This distinctly arched old tree can still be visited today and you should definitely do so if you're ever in the area.

4

The Jetty Road Eateries

The pubs here in Glenelg are the perfect places to visit if you want to get a bite to eat or have a relaxing drink – or both! The best selection of pubs can be found along Jetty Road. The area itself has quite the charming atmosphere to it, being bordered by the tranquil sea on one side. Establishments like the Grand Bar and the Broadway Hotel are perfect to relax in and indulge in some conversation. Alternatively, you can visit the pubs found around Niles Street and Brighton Road if you feel like travelling a bit further away from the town centre.

5

Swimming with Dolphins

The waters that border Glenelg is home to all manner of marine life – perhaps the most energetic of the bunch are the resident dolphin pods. You can spot these wily creatures showcase their acrobatics from the comfort of a boat. However, you can also don your scuba gear and get up-close and personal with these hyper-intelligent marine mammals.
