Things to Do in Batticaloa – the best way to experience Batticaloa

Towards the far east of the island of Sri Lanka is Batticaloa, a place that is usually overlooked when it comes to places to explore on the isle. This article provides you with information about the world of possibilities that this wonderful city has to offer.

1

The Sunrise

Watching the sunrise in Batticaloa is a must. Unlike with the other parts of Sri Lanka, the sun rises above into the sky from the seaside and not from between the mountains. This is a unique and picturesque natural activity to witness, especially when it's over the lagoon. It is a great way to begin your day!

2

Dutch Fort

Visit the Dutch Fort which was once a magnificent sight. It might be crumbling with age today, but still is a wonderful piece of history to explore. The structure was first built by the Portuguese in the year 1628 and 10 years later was taken over by the Dutch. It last fell under the command of the British. Today, inside are various administrative offices, but the ruins can still be explored. There are watchtowers, an English cannon and a ruined bell tower worth inspecting. The views of the lagoon from here are the grandest. You can also visit a museum displaying artefacts, but the information is all in Tamil. You can also visit the old prison which is now a shop.

3

Heritage Museum of Kattankudy

This museum is one of the most informative when it comes to the history of this area. The stories of the past are visible in the many recreations, models and displays in the museum. The staff are English speaking and ever ready to assist you.

4

Batticaloa Lighthouse

This structure is very old and not accessible, yet it is one of the most intriguing sites in Batticaloa. Places to visit here couldn't be any better! You can also opt for a beautiful boat ride in the lagoon with stunning views of the lighthouse. You'll find a lovely Instagram worthy background here.

5

Singing Fish

This is a rare phenomenon and is quite a magical one. If you happen to visit between April and September, then head over to the lagoon bridge to hear the song of the underwater choir. This gets even better if you manage to make it on a full moon day. If you are staying at a hotel like Uga Bay, you could always ask for directions on how to get here if you are unsure of the location.

6

Batticaloa Beach

This is one of the most pristine beaches in Sri Lanka with rather powdery sand that is beige in colour but has a tinge of orange to it. The waters are super clean and a beautiful blue too. You can bask in the sun or have a relaxing time in the warm waters of the sparkling ocean. Beaches aren't crowded either so you can get some much-needed peace and quiet here.
