05 Hidden Gems to Visit in Melbourne – Truly Delightful Discoveries

While there are plenty of attractions in Melbourne, some of them are not that well known or featured on conventional travel guides. However, to miss them would be a shame since they provide some engaging insights into the city. Here are five such sites well worth a visit.

1

The Shrine of Remembrance

In the Kings Domain area, you will find the Shrine of Remembrance set amidst a picturesque parkland; it is a memorial which honours Australians who served and lost their lives in times of war as well as during peacekeeping operations. Inaugurated in 1934, the building features Classical architecture and is a striking sight to behold; you can climb up its stairs to the first level where there is a great viewpoint of the city's skyline. Inside, one will find historical artefacts and artworks, while special events and exhibitions are held here too.

2

The Queen Victoria Night Markets

Shopping at night can be enjoyed at one of the most popular Melbourne city attractions, the Queen Victoria Market. A well-known site during the day, this site also hosts annual summer and winter night markets which offer more shopping and foodie fun. The summer night market is generally held from November to March, while the winter night market is usually from June to August. During these periods, they take place every Wednesday and are normally from 5:00pm to 10:00pm. Expect lots of stalls selling everything from homeware and knick-knacks to art and street food as well as live music or entertainment.

3

Laneway Street Art

The city's laneways refer to the narrow and sometimes "hidden" lanes, streets and arcades within the CBD which have a unique charm about them; exploring these laneways will give you a chance to not only visit quirky bars and cafes but also take in some amazing street art. Union Lane, within walking distance of properties like Avani Melbourne Central Residences, is one such place known for its street art which makes for some great photographs too. Another spot to visit would be Hosier Lane which features a diverse array of graffiti, murals and more.

4

Coop's Shot Tower

When it comes to shopping, Melbourne Central is a popular place for retail therapy, but within this site, one will find a remarkable historical attraction too; towering to a height of 50 metres, the 19th century Coop's Shot Tower is a brick structure under a more modern Glass Cone. Standing beneath it and taking a picture is a photographic opportunity not to be missed. The shot tower was originally a bullet making factory and those looking to find out more can head to the onsite museum, open free of charge.

5

Easey's

No mention of hidden gems would be complete without including at least one dining option of which the city has many. For a unique experience, you can head to Easey's in the Collingwood neighbourhood of the city. Here, you have the opportunity to savour yummy burgers, fish & chips and more while seated in a decommissioned train carriage located on a rooftop! Beer, cider, cocktails and wines are also on the menu, while Easey's offers one a chance to enjoy street art and hip hop music too for some memorable dining.
