All You Need to Know About Sealife in Maldives

The contribution offered by the sea life in the Maldives to the economy of the country is massive-both in terms of the tourism industry and the fishing industry. Those who come to the Maldives to dive or snorkel fall in love with this sea life, and it's indeed a unique experience.

1

How to explore the Maldivian sea life?

Exploring the Maldivian sea life can be done in many ways. If you are okay with diving or snorkeling, the easiest and the most common thing to do will be to undertake one of these experiences during your stay at a Maldives water villa resort the likes of Reethi Faru Resort. If you are not comfortable with swimming, you also have another option (which can sometimes be a little more expensive). A submarine ride! Here, you get to see the rarest species of fish, turtles, and the rays even without getting your bodies all wet.

2

The Maldivian Fish

Types of fish you find in the Maldives varies largely with their sizes and colours. Sometimes you will not even be able to identify a difference between two species, but they belong to two breeds. Among the most colourful and beautiful fish breeds in the Maldives, there are species such as the Butterflyfish (10-20 cm in size), Angelfish (20-30 cm in size), Clownfish (10-18 cm in size), Longnose Hawkfish (about 13 cm in size) and many more. They all have their unique characteristics and some of them (like the long nose Hawkfish) have developed their body features to win some hard challenges without getting themselves hurt. Lagoon Triggerfish, Parrotfish, Spotfin Lionfish, and Bluestripe Snapper are some other species of fish, and some of these species are much bigger than the rest.

3

Rays

Graceful and amazing- Rays are another kind of Maldives sea life that you'll come across during your diving moments. If you want to explore them closer and click a selfie with them, all you need to do is not to panic and pretend as if you didn't notice them. They are harmless and there isn't a reason for you to freak out when they come closer. If you are lucky enough, you will be able to spot Reef Mata Rays during your excursions, so be prepared for this moment!

4

Turtles

If you visit the Maldives during June and November, you'll be able to observe how sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. In the Maldives, there are 5 species of turtles and that includes the rarest kind- the Green Sea turtle too.

5

Sharks

No- Sharks are not as deadly and aggressive as you think! In the Maldives, spotting Whitetip Reef Sharks is a possibility and as long as you don't provoke them, you are going to be fine. These sharks are so used to divers, and sometimes they don't bother even to react when you take a selfie with them. They just want to hunt fish, not the human who is there to enjoy a diving session.
