Staycations have recently found quite the popularity especially among college students and working-class millennials who would prefer to go on holidays that don't break the bank. But it is not just the result of an economic crisis that has brought these holidays where you look at the familiar with a brand-new perspective, into the light.
Despite a staycation being quite a luxurious concept, especially in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic which has forced all countries to shut down borders, it originated during an economic crisis. In 2008, the market crash in the US resulted in a new era of households who could no longer afford large budgets on their vacations. Over time, the ecological benefits of staycations were also realised as the time spent travelling was reduced drastically.
The pandemic brought the appeal of the staycation back with gusto, especially as you can stay right where you are, in Singapore and still enjoy all the perks you would expect in a holiday overseas.
