At one time, Unawatuna Beach was a well-kept secret with hardly anyone going there. However, as time passed, news of this slice of paradise began to spread and it soon became quite popular with local and foreign travellers. That said, this south coast beach is still well worth visiting and its soft sands bordered by azure waters offers a heavenly backdrop in which to chill-out by the ocean. The bay is perfect for those looking to swim, while nearby, the Japanese Peace Pagoda offers stunning sunset vistas overlooking the shore.
One of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka, the shoreline at Hikkaduwa is another favourite destination along the south coast. It is also home to a marine national park that makes it an excellent destination for activities like snorkelling and taking rides on glass-bottom boats to view diverse coral and marine life. Moving over to the east coast, you will find equally impressive beaches including the one at Pasikudah. Blessed with lovely white sand, the beach lies nestled beside a naturally protected bay which means the waters are relatively calm and shallow; ideal for family playtime by the shore, it is an excellent spot for swimming too. Adding to its allure is the fact that one can take a short boat ride to Pigeon Island. This charming island has a beach of its own while also being where one can find another marine national park. Snorkelling and diving are well worth trying and you can see coral and numerous reef fish and may even have encounters with blacktip reef sharks.
When it comes to beaches on the island's west coast, Negombo heads the list and what's more, it is within easy reach of the main international airport. This golden stretch of shore is perfect for soaking up some glorious tropical sunshine and it is little wonder there are many hotels and resorts in Sri Lanka along such beaches. Kitesurfing is a popular activity to engage in here, while this idyllic shoreline offers an ideal vantage point to catch a magical sunset too. You can also watch fishermen leave or return to the beach or even head to the nearby fish market to soak up some local culture.
