Learn how to do a Portrait Art – Simple steps to be an artist

Get ready with your HB pencil, ruler, eraser, and some sketch paper to try out something amazing. If you are someone who has only admired portrait art in your life, here's the chance of trying out one of your own. This will be a guide to draw a portrait of a male face, and of course, a great way to start.

1

Take a simple start

Yes, you do find a lot of advanced portrait art on Sri Lankan Art Gallery, but can you even imagine that most of them have started with just a simple circle? So, follow the basics and you too shall start with a large circle. Then sketch the jawline too. Keep in mind to keep both the sides of the face symmetrical.

2

Mark the guidelines and draw them

So, by now you have the shape of the face with you. Now, as the next step, you have to mark the guidelines with or without using the ruler. Since you are a beginner, you may use the ruler and mark the spots on the face area. Remember that these spots are really important because it's on them you are going to draw the face organs then.

3

Go for the eyes first

You may first proceed with eyes. Keep the law of symmetry in your mind when doing this. You are drawing a male face and you don't need to do very mysterious eyes in your first drawing. Do this as you can and see if that makes sense to you. If it doesn't, erase your first attempt and try it again.

4

Draw the nose

You have now drawn the eyes, and this makes it easier to draw the nose then. Look carefully at the corners of each eye, and then draw a nose using an angular shape. In Sri Lanka, paintings that you have observed can have different nose shapes that are way more artistic, but since you are just at the start, a basic nose will do the needful.

5

Next- the eyebrows

You now have the eyes and the nose in your art. Do the eyebrows as the next step, and always keep in mind that the first lines should be very light. Since it's a male portrait that you are drawing, use your HB pencil to darken and thicken the eyebrows then without damaging the rule of symmetry.

6

Do the lips carefully

When doing the lips, you have to draw a vertical line down the center of each eye first. This is to mark the outer boundary of the lips. Then, draw the lips very lightly (so that you can erase it whenever it goes wrong) without bringing it so close to the bottom-most spot of the nose.

7

Doing the ears and the hair

Before doing the hair, you should do the ears, and again, you have to follow the law of symmetry. You can decide on the height of the forehead, and then start drawing the hair. Once you are done, do not forget to erase all the vertical and horizontal lines that you drew on your art.
