Top 5 Things to do in Mackay – Adventures for the Whole Family

Located along the east coast of Australia, Mackay offers an ideal getaway in Queensland for young and old alike with plenty of rewarding experiences be it on land, sea or sky! Here are some of the most popular things to do which are bound to make for a truly unforgettable holiday.

1

Enjoy a Flying Fox Experience

A flying fox or zip-lining experience is not to be missed especially when you have the opportunity to do so amidst an enchanting rainforest! This is what awaits those who plan an excursion from Mackay to the Finch Hatton Gorge where Forest Flying provide memorable escapades. You will be secured safely in a harness which is around 25 metres from the ground and get the chance to glide through the canopy at your own pace. The flying fox tour which takes around 60 to 90 minutes is a great way to experience the beauty of this pristine area from a unique treetop vantage point.

2

Spend Time at the Beaches

There are some truly picturesque beaches here in which to soak up the sun, play in the sand and frolic in the surf. Those staying at a centrally located hotel in Mackay can easily visit the Harbour Beach, just a five-minute cab ride from the Central Business District (CBD). This beach is patrolled seasonally and offers access to points where one can fish as well. The Northern Beaches in Mackay are also within easy reach of the CBD and are well worth exploring; they include Blacks Beach which stretches for around six kilometres and Eimeo Beach near the heritage-listed, Mango Avenue.

3

Fish at a Variety of Locations

For fishing in Queensland, the Mackay Region is amongst the premier destinations to go to and there are diverse locations where you can cast your line. Those who do so have the chance to catch a wide array of fish including bream, mangrove jack, blue salmon, barracuda, golden trevally and the local favourite, barramundi. The Pioneer River which runs through the city near properties like Oaks Mackay Rivermarque Hotel is an excellent spot for fishing as are the Northern Beaches; you can also fish out at sea at places like Newry Island or inland at dams such as the Kinchant Dam.

4

Encounter Cute Platypuses

Those planning an excursion to the Eungella National Park which is around 90 minutes from Mackay have a chance to witness platypuses in their natural habitat. This is one of the best spots to observe these adorable egg-laying mammals feeding or playing in the water. Along the Broken River, you will find special viewing decks from which you can wait patiently to see these generally shy creatures. Dawn or again at dusk are the best times to spot platypuses though do remember to keep silent and still as much as you can!

5

Feel the Rush of Skydiving

Looking for something truly exhilarating? Nothing beats the adrenaline rush of freefalling 220 km/hr from 15,000 feet above the ground! Those interested can make their way to Airlie Beach which is approximately 1.45 hours from Mackay; this is the drop point for skydiving experiences offered by the likes of Skydive Australia. Apart from the thrills of freefall, you can also look forward to mesmerising views of the Whitsunday Islands, Tropical North Queensland and the beach.
