Top 5 East Coast Beaches in Sri Lanka – Enchanting Shorelines in Paradise

The paradise isle of Sri Lanka is blessed with some of the most picturesque shorelines in the world; the east coast is one place you can soak up this magical coastal charm with gorgeous beaches to explore each offering something different to experience.

1

Arugam Bay Beach

Starting things off is the best surfing beach on the east coast, Arugam Bay; in fact, it is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Asia! The waves here can reach heights between 1.5 to 2.5 metres with April to October being the surfing season. When it comes to heading out to surf, the Main Point is the most popular hotspot in Arugam Bay and features right-hand waves that can be enjoyed by novices too. Other places to surf in and around this area include Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock.

2

Pasikuda Beach

The perfect east coast beach for family getaways and romantic escapes, Pasikuda Beach offers a lovely stretch of white sandy shore in Sri Lanka. Resorts and hotels can be found right beside the beach from some of the leading hospitality brands in the country including names such as Theme Resorts & Spas. The ideal vantage point from which to catch a sunrise, this beach lies nestled beside a naturally protected bay so you can look forward to shallow and safe waters far out to sea. It is also ideal for water sports including snorkelling, swimming, jet skiing, kayaking, windsurfing and diving to both reefs and wrecks.

3

Kalkudah Beach

Next to Pasikuda Beach is another popular shoreline where you can look forward to more laid-back coastal bliss; bordered by coconut palms, Kalkudah Beach which stretches for around 2 km is the ideal spot to just kick back, work on your tan and enjoy fun and frolic in the surf. Much like its neighbouring beach, here too the waters are shallow and calm thanks to the off-shore reef. Snorkelling, diving, windsurfing and water skiing can also be enjoyed here for those looking for more active thrills.

4

Nilaveli Beach

An idyllic stretch of shore to experience the chilled-out island vibes, Nilaveli Beach is another popular east coast beach worth adding to your beach-hopping adventures. Around 16 km from Trincomalee, this scenic shoreline offers a lovely setting bordered by palm trees and the dazzling waters of the Indian Ocean. It is also a convenient spot from which to head off on boat excursions to nearby Pigeon Island; featuring a marine national park, this island has a beach of its own while offering opportunities for snorkelling and diving.

5

Marble Beach

Also within easy reach of Trincomalee (around 17 km away) is Marble Beach which offers relative seclusion amidst the sun, sand and surf. The Sri Lankan Air Force maintains this heavenly shoreline which is a wonderful place to just lie back and watch the world go slowly by or head off for a relaxing swim. Those in search of some adventure can try snorkelling or take boat rides; alternatively, you can go on a hike to the summit of Diamond Hill and enjoy amazing views of the bay.
