Five Steps to Avoid a Drunk Driving Accident

Drunk driving can be harmful even when it doesn't result in fatalities. Drunk driving accidents can prove costly when substantial damage occurs, and injured drivers are often forced to hire skilled legal professionals to recover damages for their losses. It’s important that drivers focus on taking preventative measures to ensure they don’t have to deal with the fallout of a drunk driving accident. Below, we outline five crucial steps to take to avoid drinking and driving.

1

Call an Uber

Ridesharing apps have made it much more economical to make the decision not to drink and drive. If you’re planning a night out and know you want to let loose and enjoy yourself with a few drinks, save yourself the trouble and call an Uber or Lyft instead.

2

Designate a Driver

If you’re on a budget but plan to head out with a group of friends, select one friend as the designated driver for the evening. Be sure your designated driver understands they aren’t able to have any drinks if they’re planning on driving everyone home.

3

Wait Before Driving

In order to combat drunk driving, all states - including Florida - have adopted laws establishing a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% as the legal limit. It takes about an hour for alcohol to be processed within your body. If you had a few drinks but plan on getting behind the wheel anyway, you are encouraged to drink plenty of water and wait a considerable amount of time before driving.

4

Keep Your Eyes on the Road...and Others

You can often spot a drunk driver on the road because of their erratic behavior. Not only should you keep your distance from this driver, but you should also call the police to ensure they’re taken off the road.

5

Don’t Let Friends Drink and Drive

Working to prevent drunk driving accidents extends beyond the driver to the general public. If you see a friend that’s inebriated and insisting they can drive, offer them a ride home instead. We all can do our part to help keep everyone safe while traveling area roadways.
