Culture-Rich Places to Visit in Singapore – Immerse Yourself in the Heritage

Singapore is synonymous with all that is modern and elegant like shopping malls and fancy restaurants and technological advancements that look like they came right out of the future. But has it ever occurred to you to visit Singapore as a means of educating yourself about its vibrant culture?

1

National Gallery of Singapore

If you are planning a trip to Singapore in the hopes of immersing yourself in the local culture, your first stop would be the National Gallery of Singapore. It went public in 2015 and is home to the National Collection which includes some masterful South Asian art pieces that range from as far back as the 19th century to today. Before you visit make sure to check out the gallery website so you are aware of what to see.

2

Masjid Sultan

Sites such as My Singapore Travel will have on its list of recommendations the Masjid Sultan or Sultan Mosque which has a history that goes back to 1928. It is located in Kampong Glam which is Singapore's Arab Quarter and is an architectural masterpiece that is worth the visit. The Arab Quarter is also a great place to learn more about the Muslim population of Singapore and how they have contributed to the shaping of the national identity.

3

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Located on the waterfront at the iconic Marina Bay, Esplanade is another reason to visit this entertainment hub which you would often associate as a place synonymous with a Singapore nightlife guide. However, the Esplanade is much more than that being a shopping, dining and performative arts hub. There are many venues inside this complex that cater to the enrichment of the local arts scene. So you could catch a show in a close, indoor hall or an open-air theatre. There's also some spectacular works of architecture and art that you can visit while you are there.

4

Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum

The only museum in Singapore that is dedicated to Southeast Asian Biodiversity, the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum was opened in 2015 with a vast collection of plants and animals across 16 thematic zones that showcase these natural wonders. The museum is not only a great place to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature but also a very educational experience. It is highly recommended that you take your children here if you are travelling to Singapore with your family. There are also three dinosaurs in the museum that younger children will flail over.

5

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Constructed in 2002, the temple features Tang Dynasty styled architecture and is an aesthetic feast for the eyes. It is the home of a historical tooth relic said to have belonged to Buddha. It is also a centre for Chinese Buddhism and Culture. There are regular temple services, welfare and educational opportunities for practising Buddhists or those interested in learning more about the philosophy. There's also plenty of architecture and sculptures to see for those who are visiting for non-religious purposes.
