Top 5 Museums in Bangkok – A Dose of Thai History

Bangkok is one of the most popular destinations to visit in South East Asia, being particularly renowned for its lively atmosphere and spectacular nightlife. But if you're in the mood for something quieter, the city has some magnificent museums to offer – here're 5 of the best.

1

Bangkokian Museum

The Bangkokian Museum is one of the more obscure museums you'll find in the city. It's nestled away in the sleepy neighbourhood of Khet Bang Rak, surrounded by a number of buildings that were built all the way back in the 1930s. Having been around for almost as long, this museum contains an amazing collection of exhibits that have been perfectly preserved over the decades. In essence, touring through the establishment's halls will give you a fascinating insight into what the life of a middle-class Thai citizen would've looked like 100 years ago. Due to its remote location and modest reputation, you'll likely be the only person visiting the museum at a time. Don't let that put you off though, there's a certain charm to exploring these halls by yourself in a state of reflective calmness.

2

Siam Museum

If you're staying at one of the centrally located Bangkok city hotels, say for example the Avani Atrium Bangkok, the Siam Museum is a fantastic visit that's less than 30 minutes away! Museum Siam Khet Phra Nakhon – to be precise – is actually an interactive museum that allows visitors to learn more about science, art, and history through a mix of video, audio, and gamification processes. The venue itself is divided into 14 rooms that showcase the life, culture, and history of the Thai people.

3

Bangkok National Museum

The Bangkok National Museum is the largest and most feature-rich museum you'll find in the city. It is also one of the oldest museums found in Thailand, being opened in the late 1800s. It is here that you'll find the largest collection of Thai artefacts, relics, and scriptures – some of which can be dated back several centuries! There are three main galleries for you to explore here; the Thai History Gallery, the Thai Archaeological and Art History Collection, and the Decorative Arts and Ethnological Collection. All three of these provide a feature-rich look into an aspect of Thai life and culture, so don't skip out on any of them!

4

Ancient Siam

If you want to see all the brilliant sights and attractions Thailand has to offer in one place, Ancient Siam is where you want to be. This is a giant open-air museum that has been built in the shape of Thailand. On these grounds, you'll find smaller replicas of the most famous constructs and buildings scattered throughout the country. In many ways, it's a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and spend a few quiet minutes admiring the great architectural works of Thailand.

5

Art in Paradise

Art in Paradise is Bangkok's first 3D Art Museum. Here you'll find recreations of classic period pieces as well as bold new works from modern artists. Some of these paintings are even interactable, and you can pose alongside the painted characters. All in all, a visit here will make for a great afternoon with friends and family.
