An island that is famous for its beach parties, Koh Phangan is synonymous with boisterous beaches, all-night celebrations and as a resort that attracts all kinds of revellers from all over the world for a Lunar party of a lifetime. Here are some facts about Koh Phangan you should know before you go.

Basic Information

The island of Koh Phangan is located on the east coast of Southern Thailand in the province of Suratthani. The capital of the province is Thong Sala and there is a population of 12000 people situated in an area of around 168 square kilometres. Koh Phangan is known for its white sandy beaches and a very vibrant nightlife.

Distance from Other Cities

Koh Phangan is situated about 766 km from Bangkok and the best way to get between the cities is to fly. You can also get an understanding of the placement of Koh Phangan with the knowledge that it is situated 43 km from Koh Tao, 54 km from mainland Suratthani and 20 km from Koh Samui. Festivals and Events

If you are planning to spend time at a Koh Phangan beach resort there are plenty of events and festivals that you can get involved in including the Full Moon Party which is held every full moon day where travellers and revellers gather on the beach from all over the world to celebrate a giant beach party. The crowds rave into the night with lots of dancing, drinking and celebration that is all held under the light of the moon. It brings an almost unreal energy to the island and everyone makes it a point to join in.

Another event to participate in is the Walking Street Market in Thong Sala. The market opens every Saturday at 4 pm and goes on all night. It is a great opportunity to shop around and to witness the uniqueness of Koh Phangan.

Transport

In Koh Phangan, you can travel by either the bus, taxi, tuk-tuk or a motorbike taxi which transports one passenger each. An important point to remember when you are hiring transport is that it is better to know the costs of certain vehicles to certain areas as the taxi drivers do not turn on any meters and will try to fleece you if you aren't prepared in advance.

Did You Know?

Did you know that Koh Phangan is the perfect place to celebrate Songkran Water Festival which is held for a few days every April and is how Thai's usher the Thai New Year? The entire island breaks out their water pistols and no one on the street is a stranger for these few days. Accommodation will be fully booked so be sure to book ahead if you'd like to make it in time for Songkran.
