The Sichuan province's capital, the city of Chengdu is steeped in history which is believed to go back more than 2,000 years. One of the most prominent cities during the Qin Dynasty, it offers much to discover for those looking to learn more about its heritage.
This well-known attraction in Chengdu has been dedicated to Zhuge Liang; he played many roles during the Kingdom of Shu including being reputed as a diplomat and politician as well as for being involved in military matters. Visitors have much to see including six steles, one of which is said to date back to 809 and the Temple of Zhuge Liang where you can see sculptures of this prominent figure. The Temple of Liu Bei, Sanyi Temple and Huiling Mausoleum (or Tomb of Liu Bei) are amongst the other highlights here.
The Du Fu Thatched Cottage was once the site where the well-known Tang Dynasty poet, Du Fu resided and offers more insights into the history of Chengdu. Serviced apartment or hotel options close to Tianfu Square are also within easy reach of this site where Du Fu is said to have written over 240 poems that are now national treasures. You will find a bronze statue of the poet here along with the Tablet Pavilion which is where the original cottage stood. Other noteworthy attractions include the History in Verse Hall, Gong Bu Temple and idyllic gardens with bridges, streams and pavilions.
One of the county's most famed Taoist temples, Qingyang Palace originally dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Within a 10-minute drive, from properties the likes of Somerset Riverview Chengdu, this captivating attraction has many sites of interest such as the Eight Trigrams Pavilion; it is a captivating octagonal structure with eight pillars that feature dragon reliefs, a ceiling with eight trigram symbols and a dome top. Those exploring Qingyang Palace can see several other eye-catching highlights such as the Sanqing Hall, Hunyuan Palace and various Taoist cultural relics.
The Jinsha Site Museum revolves around one of China's most significant archaeological discoveries in the early part of the 21st century; the findings made in 2001, included remains of the ancient Shu State civilization which is believed to date back around 3,000 years ago. Some of the significant findings on display are artefacts of ancient ivory, gold and jade which showcase the craftsmanship of the period. You will also find some remarkable stone statues of both human and animal forms on display here.
Located along the banks of the Jinjiang River, this attraction lets you soak up some history and enjoy the natural beauty. It is home to the Wangjiang Tower or "River Watching Tower" which has been dedicated to Xue Tao, a female poet who lived during the Tang Dynasty; while she led a hard life when growing up, she went on to become a renowned and beautiful singer and composed around 500 poems too. Xue Tao is said to have loved bamboos and you will find numerous varieties of bamboo here along with her statue. Other attractions to see include the Chongli Tower, Wuyunxian Hall and Xue Tao Well.
