Festivals of the Maldives – Indulge in a cultural extravaganza

Given that the Maldives is a country that's so rich in its natural scenery and underwater experiences, the cultural importance of festivals and occasions there gets often underrated. But the Maldives is a destination that's rich with cultural aspects too. Its festivals are good proof of this!

1

The Maldivian Independence Day

The Maldives was ruled by the British for 77 years, and on 26th July 1965, the country received full independence from them. Just like the Independence celebrations of the other countries, the Maldivian celebrations are also great with parades, performances, and many other festivals. Sometimes, various parties organize concerts and food festivals in celebration of the day, and many locals take part in them to relax for a while.

2

Republic Day

Yes, the Maldives has a separate Independence Day and a National Day, but it also has a Republic Day! This is because the country became a republic (actually for the second time) on the 11th of November in 1968. Although the Republic Day is not as grandly celebrated as Independence Day, there are celebrations taking place in Male- the capital city and in some other towns in the Maldives.

3

Ramadan

The Maldives is a Muslim country, and this is why Ramadan celebrations take a major role in the lives of the locals. This festival generally falls in the 9th month of the Islamic calendar (somewhere in August and September) and this period of the year means a fully festive season for the locals in the Maldives. The festival is followed by a fasting period, and during this period, offices and institutions finish their working shifts earlier and let the employees engage in their rituals. Many Maldives hotel deals are available during the Ramadan season, often arranged by popular resorts such as Faarufushi Maldives and these make the tourists also join their Ramadan celebrations in style.

4

Eid Festival

In September, the Ramadan season comes to an end, and the Eid festival is what comes across during this time. They prepare massive meals across the country and, various celebrations happen for about 3 days at a stretch highlighting various cultural and religious values.

5

The National Day

In the year 1573, the Maldivian locals drove out the Portuguese invaders who were ruling this island nation. The National Day of the Maldives is held to celebrate this victory, and today, this celebration is full of parades and national events that are organized by the government authorities. This falls on the 3rd month of the Islamic Calendar (somewhere in February and March) and the locals call it 'Rabee-ul-Awwal'.

6

Prophet's Birthday

This is another significant and vibrant festival that takes place in the 03rd months of the Islamic Calendar (the month that celebrates the National Day as well). Visit Male during this season to witness the grandest shows done in commemoration of the Prophet's Birthday. All offices and shops close early in this time allowing their employees to visit their respective mosques for prayers.
