Top 5 Things to Do in Kalutara – Sun-Kissed South Coast Escapades

If you are looking for an idyllic coastal getaway in Sri Lanka where you can enjoy fun in the sand as well as cultural adventures, then Kalutara is the destination for you! These are some of the top things you can look forward to doing when on holiday here.

1

Chill-Out at the Beach

One of the best things to do in Kalutara is to just spend lazy days at the beach working on a bronzed tan! There are some lovely stretches of golden sands here bordered by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. It is an ideal place to also play with the kids or take romantic walks, especially during sunset. Those choosing to stay at hotels in Kalutara right beside the beach can look forward to waking up to ocean views, engaging in beach sports and dining beside the shore too.

2

Head to the Kalutara Temple

If you are interested in soaking up some local culture, head to the Kalutara Temple which is sometimes referred to as the "Gangatilaka Vihara". Easy to reach from local hotels the likes of Turyaa Kalutara, this well-known Buddhist site has a huge white stupa that is hollow; inside, one will find religious statues as well as murals which depict scenes from the life of Lord Buddha. Near the temple is the Kalutara Bodhiya, a Bodhi tree believed to have originated from a sapling from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.

3

Visit the Kalutara Basket Centre

For another local experience, plan a visit to the Kalutara Basket Centre where you can learn about and watch a traditional livelihood in action. Located in the heart of the city, this centre is where one can witness how the leaves of the wetakeiya palm are used to create a whole range of items including distinctive baskets; coasters, purses, lampshades and hats are some of the other products that are intricately made by hand and which make for unique souvenirs too.

4

Explore Richmond Castle

Another notable site is Richmond Castle which dates back to the late 19th century during British colonial rule. Amongst the most well-known attractions in Kalutara, it is a mansion that belonged to a wealthy landowner or "mudaliyar" at the time. Set amidst a large area of over 40 acres, the mansion's design was influenced by an Indian Maharaja's palace though features other architectural styles as well. While it functions as a children's home at present, it can still be visited and offers fascinating insights.

5

Experience Spa Bliss

After all that exploring, you can indulge in some pampering at a spa in Kalutara! Hotels can be found which have onsite spas and are ideal since you won't have to leave the premises to enjoy wellness treatments. You have the chance to experience some holistic healing which can include the use of Sri Lankan natural herbal massage oils and scrubs for a variety of therapies. Some spas will also have Jacuzzi and steam room facilities while depending on the property, guests will also be able to make use of a gym and engage in daily yoga to find that essential "balance".
