Cultural Places to Visit in Galle- Must visit attractions in a colonial city

Galle is a city with a different vibe in Sri Lanka. It's a coastal city that has once been considered a significant ruling area of the Dutch. The colonial charms are still there to be seen in this city and do not forget to visit the following places when you get the chance to be in Galle.

1

Galle Fort

The main point of interest for every tourist staying at Galle hotels is the Galle Fort. This has been first built by the Portuguese, and then has been taken over by the Dutch. The British also have done some arrangements in the fort, and this is why many places inside the Fort have some colonial influences that are worth exploring. It's a World Heritage Site today, and more surprises await you as you take your walks along its narrow streets.

2

Galle Fort Clock Tower

While exploring the Galle fort during your vacation spent at hotels such as Fortress Resort and Spa, stop at the Galle Fort Clock Tower for a while to admire its incredible architectural design. If you take a guide with you for your Galle exploration, he will be able to tell you many stories related to the tower, and all of them will be equally interesting. According to the stories, there has been a great local surgeon named Dr. Peter Daniel Anthonisz and after his death, people of Galle have built this tower in memory of him with their own money.

3

Dutch Reformed Church

This is also another important attraction that's located in the Fort. This church is indeed one of the oldest churches in Sri Lanka as it has been built in the year 1749. It's a very simple church that has the basic type of chairs and benches, but they all are smart enough to depict the elegance it has as a church. If you explore the outside of this church, you'll also be able to see some of the tombstones with some epitaphs well-preserved.

4

The Maritime Archeology Museum

It's another attraction in Galle worth visiting. The museum is established in an old Dutch warehouse, and there are so much to be explored in it. Glass bottles and various antiques that have been recovered from diverse shipwrecks can be seen here. If you need to know more about the exhibits or even about the stories that they reveal, you may watch the 15-minute informative video shown by the officials, and if there are some more to be clarified, you can also inquire the friendly staff, who will be more than willing to help you.

Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum Complex

Martin Wickramasinghe was one of the most reputed writers in Sri Lanka, and this museum complex has been arranged in remembrance of him. This is where Mr.Wickramasingha had been brought up, and this complex houses many of his belongings and his written manuscripts as well. It also houses some musical instruments and utensils that were used in that era.
